I've been running a Wipperman 10X1 stainless steel chain (an extravagance but it came with the build kit) on my Campy 10-speed Chorus bike for several months and it's been very good, showing almost no wear after 2200 miles. I really like the Conex link plus the ability to adjust the initial chain length with a standard chain tool. Now I'm looking to the future and wondering about a replacement when I need it.

Wipperman makes "Campy compatible" 10-speed chains in 6.2 mm width and "Shimano compatible" 10-speed chains in 6.0 mm width. However, Campy themselves recently introduced an ultra-narrow 10-speed chain 5.9 mm in width and claims it improves shifting and more tolerant derailleur adjustment.

So my question is can (or should) I buy a Wipperman Shimano-width chain as a replacement for my current Campy compatible chain? If nothing else, the Shimano-style chains should be easier to find and may improve shifting as Campy claims for its own chains. Thoughts and experience?

Try the new KMC X-10 SuperLight. Very narrow. Very light. Around $50.

I don't know the answer to your question, and I'd like to know too. Whatever it is I wouldn't want to give up the Connex link. I'm weary of dealing with the pin nonsense.

I'm intending to upgrade from the Record 10 chain to the Record Ultra-Narrow as soon as the old chain shows some stretch. I really like the idea of the narrower chain, I'm lazy and don't like having to trim the front derailleur. The only time I remove a chain is to replace it, currently have 4200 miles on the Record chain, see no reason to change brands. I use the Finishline online chain cleaner.

I guess I answered my own inquiry. I called Wipperman's US distributor and posed the same question to them. The Tech guy there told me their Shimano-width 10-speed chain (10S0 or !0S1) would actually shift better on a Campy 10-speed drivetrain than their Campy-width chain so that's what I'll get next time.
