Hehe

Anyway, this got me thinking. How do you guys transport your bikes? I have a crappy trunk rack, but I really don't like it. It doesn't seem all too stable, plus a lot of pressure is on my car's stock spoler if I transport more than one bike.

I priced out a roof rack but it was nearly $700. Holy crap, is that normal?

Thjats kind of how mine looks like. That thing is damn sturdy. Not like the stupid thing bones stuff.
I've transported my bike probably 2000 miles on that thing and never worry about sturdiness.

I don't transport my bike much - usually when i'm moving which usualy ends up being several 300 mile trips

I figure I'm pretty much screwed with my new bike - thick aero tubing makes it incompatible with carriers that strap to the tubes, and deep rim/disk wheels make it incompatible with carriers that strap to the wheels. I suppose I could take the wheels off and use a mount based on attaching to the QR dropouts, but it's got horizontal rear drops, and I wouldn't be getting much benefit from trucking it around that way if I had to put the wheels inside the car. Oh well, at least it fits in the back of both of my vehicles.

Here's a question for people that use trunk or hitch racks - do they lock? They've always struck me as being really easy to steal.

That sounds high. A run of the mill Thule or Yakima should be more like $500 for everything you need to carry one or two bikes.

I removed my back seat. Best 0 dollar investment I even made. I can fit 3 people up front, 3 bikes in back, and more than enough crap in the trunk for a weekend getaway.

SaabFan: Yeah, that price was for 3 bikes :)

SBW: I don't have a hitch so that's not an option :(

All: Thanks for the input :D

Something I should mention about bike racks is that the kind like the one in the picture will tear up car paint. The previous owner of my crown victoria used a bike rack, and it shows.

I use a Yakima roof rack that I pieced together off ebay for around $300. Two fork mount racks plus the roof rack. Use the online configurators from Thule or Yakima to get the part nos. then hit ebay. Just remember not to drive into any low hanging stuff.

So getaway now means running from the cops? Thats a common term for weekend vacation around here, but I guess its like soda vs calling it pop like we do here, there are different terms in different places.

If I pretended I was British and called it a holliday, I'm sure you guys would have really tore me a new one.

The cops could never identify Michigander, since he always seems to have something covering his face.

Was at the AACA Eastern Meet in Hershey this past weekend, saw two oldies with cycles on the running boards. I think it's the new hip thang with the old folks. :)
