I should be up there this year. Any places I could rent a decent fixed gear road bike? Should I even attempt to ride considering I do NOT live in a huge city?

doubt you can rent a fix (although the day probably isn't far off). def ride in nyc - it's the best way to experience all of the many facets of the city.

it'll be a bit ****in cold though

Not sure about rentals, but you should for sure ride. It's not as tough as everyone makes it out to be.

Actually, I think that Metro bicycles (there's one on 14th between 1st and 2nd) might rent bikes, but they'd probably be cruisers or whatever.

52 - 54 cm is what I do. I just wanna go with fixed so I don't have to worry about some ******* stealing a rear derailleur and me having to fork it out. That or shove extra ultegras in my pocket? I'll have to see whether or not I'll have time - I can give you my number. How much to rent?

The thieves in NYC are so hard they just steal your rear derailleur, and leave the rest there. Absolutely. :)

That's what a guy was complaining about in the commuting forum. He locked his bike up well, wheels and all, and someone just stole his derailleur. WTF over

That is hilarious. I'm sorry, bike thievery sucks and all, but just taking the rear derailleur is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard of. Especially because it's damn hard to do without breaking the chain as well.

We get people coming in all the time with missing brake pads. One lady even had her rear tube...JUST her rear tube... stolen from her locked bike. Some guy in the East Village goes around on rampages stealing just left grips and handlebar tape.


The times-up New Year's ride has been voted the third "best free thing to do for New Year's in NYC" by some schmanzy NY magazine...second only to Times Square and rolling bums for crack.

works for me, if I can keep up. I just converted my commuter to fixed and wish that I could bring it, but alas my friend would probably pissed if I showed up with a huge bike case to shove into his car with two other people. I have been offered a nice fixie to ride around for the weekend up there. This is gonna kick ass.
