Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fenders are lame, but...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Fenders are lame, but bike winter is here. I've got a rush hour with no back brake and a front brake; is there anything anyone here recommends for bolting on for the rain months? I saw a couple fenders this morning that bolt onto the brake area, but I'm not so sure whats available for the front.
Thanks.

Fenders are awesome. You must not have used them before. Buy some cheap full coverage ones and you're set. They take 5 minutes to install. Do you have eyelets? if not you may have to get the cheesy clip on 'race style' ones. Still, fenders are awesome and don't bash them!
but they weigh soooo much :)

Fenders rock.
Now repeat that 100 times and then I may help you with suggestions.
BTW, I'm currently thinking about replacing the steel struts of my lovely Zéfal fenders w/ Al. They really weigh a ton for no good reason.
Fenders are not lame. Riding in the rain without them and getting the line of crap up your back is. If they weren't a bit spendy I would love a set of Honjo fenders.
looks like somebody or two or three have already beat me to the fenders are not lame point...
and i hope the "but they weigh so much" was a joke.

No it's not bad at all! I'd put those on a nicer commuter/cargo bike. I bought The SKS Full coverage 26" fenders for $15 for my snow slush salt and **** MTB. They are quite nice fenders for he money. They LOOK like plastic, but I drilled one for a mounting hole, and discovered they are actually aluminum covered in plastic.

Fenders = not lame. They don't weigh nearly as much as a soggy @ss.

yeah, they laminate it so that the aluminum doesn't bend and the plastic doesn't crack. Its a kind of yin/yang deal.

i did last winter (fall/spring and summer too) with "sks race blades" on my rush hour
work fine but don't do much for my feet, especially when the rain gets really nasty

fenders are lame? them's fightin words... I think being dirty and wet is pretty lame. at least when riding your bike to work. now, completing a race and being all sweaty, dirty and wet is pretty badass.

Full fenders and mud flaps will help a lot to keep your feet (and the bike's BB area) clean. mud flaps should reach down to the point where they are only an inch or two off the ground.

i'm not drilled for fenders though
who makes them that are fork attachable?

If all else fails, you can always make something work with hose clamps. Just tape the fork well with gaffer's or electrical tape to save the paint.
I love fenders. I use a full coverage set with them chopped a bit. I cut the rear so its about 1/3 coverage, just enough so it starts to arc around the tire. Looks slightly cooler to me.

planet bike has a set that clamps on with rubber straps. $32.

Not a joke, but you might have mis-read it -- LoFarkas wasn't referring to fenders, but to steel struts. SKS fenders come with heavy steel mounting struts, which is complete overkill. Berthoud and Honjo both use alloy struts which are much lighter.
Edit: OOops, no, I'm the dumbass who missed a post in this thread :). There was a smiley, so...

I am a believer in Freddy Fenders. The front fender for the clip-on set mounts with one bracket on the back of the brake bolt and it has an easy release when you don't need it. The rear fender for the set isn't that great as it lacks 180 degree coverage. Get the mud guard to mount on your seat tube and you should stay dry.
Anyone know some good (cheap) fenders for a 27" front and rear set? those bikeplant ones seem to not come in 27"
fenders will be interchangeable between 27" and 700, there's not that big a difference*

if you have fenders for eyelets and no eyelets, you can go to home depot and get some of these. they are in the electrical section and are made to mount cable or wire to stuff. they come in all different sizes and if you get the right size they work great. plus the rubber doesn't ruin you frame.

i have had nothing but success mounting all of my fenders to my track bike (with no mounts) using only zip ties
if you use the same color as your bike or as the fenders it doesnt look any different at all

sks race blades yeah their pricey but i love them, i won't trade them for any ones that you have to skrew in. they can be put on and off like a snap. the only problem i can say is they move around when you hit bumps but other then that their great!!!!

I use the planet bike freddy clip on rear fende.r I don't have the clearance on the track fork to run a front one.
The flipper fender straps to the seatpost and gives tons of coverage, it's what my GF uses on her fixie. We both need good options to keep the toes dry.

Yes...I have a pair of Planet bike fenders. I've used the same pair on 27"X1 1/8 and 700c...they easily fit both wheel sizes.

Of course. That's the point, isn't it:rolleyes: You need a flap for total success, though. Standard fenders only protect down to your knees.

I am using the side of a milk jug attached to the end of the fender. I can't believe that there are 2 pages of praise for fenders in the SS/fixed forum. Maybe this place is okay.
Bonus points: You can decorate black fenders with white-out. Boss.

i was at the lbs yesterday and the guy was telling me that some company is coming out with inflateable rear fenders. they attach to your seatpost and can be folded out of the way and then when you need them, they take about 10psi to inflate. thought that sounded pretty intriguing, but i think i'll probably go with classic fenders.

Its because all the posters in this thread come from cold nasty rainy places too. Not too many san diego boys or the likes!

i'm going to throw in another reccomendation for the raceblades, i rock those on my rush hour, and it's nice to be able to take them easily on and off for days when i know it's not going to be ****ty out. I do find that i need to give them a fair amount of clearance off the wheels so that bumps and **** don't make them rub against my tires.
Another request for fender on a track bike. No clearance for your typical full coverage ones... Maybe I'll just have to get used to a little water on the feet.

I have the Freddy Hardcore's, they cover the entire rear from chainstay back around. Good fenders. The "mudflap" in the front isn't long enough to prevent waterlogging my feet, though. I need to fashion another one.
Good fenders, fairly cheap. I have been pleased with them so far.
but they weigh soooo much :)
so does a bike boom slag steel framed fixie
So I picked some of the planet bike fenders up at my LBS; seems as though they wont really work on a Rush Hour as there's no brazeons. Is anyone using them on a RH?

It was mentioned about 100 times in this thread, you can just use a hose clamp to attach it to your frame.

Here is the link on how to make a mudflap from stair tread cover.

Is it strange this guy's last name is "wetmore" and he designs mudflaps?
Question for those out there with full fenders and track ends...
Do you have any issues removing the rear wheel?
I have SKS full fenders on my conversion (regular road bike drop outs...) and I find that it's a tight squeeze when I have to remove my rear wheel. The tire presses against the front section of the fender. Now, I try to set my fenders flush with the tire and I always wonder if you would have to set the fender in an akward way (ie not following the line of the wheel) to be able to use them on a bike with fork ends; you know, to be able to remove the wheel without pressing against the rear section of the fender.
Do I make any sense?

There was a thread about this last week. It is not uncommon. You can alleviate it by getting some extra breakaway mounts for the back.

What about the Freddy Fender SpeedEZ?
They seem to have the same quick mounting hardware as raceblades, but much better coverage.
Has anyone tried those on a Pista or similar bike? Is there enough clearance?
