Foo - What sport do you participate in besides bike riding?.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Rugby!
That is what makes it so funny when I hear about one of those 'cycling is real sport' articles. I just think how much fun it is to get a baseball, basketball or even American football player on a Rugby pitch and see them sucking wind after a few minutes.

LAX! and thats it!
I was a couch potato before my cycling days. No one who knew me seriously expected me to enjoy cycling when I first started. So far, cycling is still my only sporting activity. But that is subject to change.
Running (as much as my hips will allow), rock climbing, kayaking, boxing, swimming, tennis. I really like playing tennis but I suck at it and usually have no one to play with. Boxing is fun, but to spar with people you have to go to the gym and I HATE the gym. I don't have my own kayak, but I rent whenever I go. I like to swim but I can only really do a doggy paddle. Rock climbing is cool, but I get more and more concerned about falling to the point where I don't really want to do it anymore. When I broke my leg, my fractures healed wrong and I was in a full length cast for 11 months which affected my ankle, knee, and hip. I went from running 80 miles a week training for a marathon to only being able to run 5 miles max.
And that's why I mostly ride bikes!

I race motorcycles, cars, sail boats, play tennis, golf, ping-pong, volleyball, hike, dance (not sure if that counts as sports, although you do get a workout and are scored in competitions). Does jumping out of perfectly good airplanes count as a sport?
In the air: I fly (a J-3 Cub and a CGS Hawk) and also build and fly free-flight, rubber powered, models.
On the ground: Backpacking
In the water: Sea Kayak

Intramural sports: soccer, basketball, floor hockey, volleyball and a bit of running and maybe some others I can't think of now.

Back in school, I helped start an intramural capture-the-flag program. Does that count? I also fenced, ran track, and did soccer.
These days, it's pretty much just the biking, though I'm planning on starting to run some time soon. I'll probably promptly stop about 5 minutes later. :D

I used to run like a demon, but the knees gave out, eventually. Now I swim and fence a bit (Saabfan, we should fence sometime...en garde!). Hiking is pretty great, too.
Ooo, and ping pong, if that's a sport. Lots of ping pong.

I Always wanted to use that "but I'm not left handed!" line from the Princess Bride in the middle of a match. Except I am, in fact, left handed.
I bet you west coasters have some pretty brilliant hiking. I'm working on the 46 high peaks here in NY but the going is slow, since I've hit all the easy ones. And all the ones with the good views - so only the tough, sucky ones are left.

Ah, yeah.
You should totally come out west and climb some peaks! I've done a bunch in the Cascades and a few in the Rockies, and it's lots of fun (and hard work, of course).
I should probably find a good winter sport to get into like skiing or snowboarding. But I'm short on money right now, so I'll probably just be working out in the gym (free) a lot this winter.

oh yes. Skiing and snowboarding. For the few weeks that it's so ****ing cold that I can't ride, shredding powder gets me my fix. (*dreams about the coming winter*...)

Taerom, you could always take up sledding. It's cheap, and since it's a sport dominated by little kiddies, you'd easily be able to pwn the local slopes and impress all the other sledders.

Yeah, some day I definitely will! I'm bound to end up out there for work sooner or later. I'd definitely believe that it's totally different than hiking here in NY. Other than some of the really big or really remote peaks (Marcy!) I'm used to hitting two or three in a day's work.

I've been skiing since I could walk. Tried boarding a few years ago, and just as I was getting good at it, someone stole my board. :(

If you plan really well, you can bag one big peak, like one of the Three Sisters, Mt St Helens or Borah, for example, in a day. I've not yet done any really intense ones (like Hood or Rainier or Shasta or what have you), but they take a lot more planning when it takes more than a day.

Yes. There is actually some very nice hiking within an hour and a half of downtown Los Angeles. You can even find deserted trails (yes on the weekend) as long as you don't insist on them going to a peak or waterfall.
Last time I went packing (a few years ago) it was even pretty easy to get a backcountry permit on 0 days notice. Oh you could not get one for the most popular trailheads, but for others there were often days with no permits issued. (and less popular trails had no bears that were used to 'shopping' in backpacks).

So everyone on the team rotates though each job? Or do you have assigned roles. I'm not sure if I could handle the stress of actually hucking the rock.

It's a blast. Though I think all the drinking my team does before a game negates the physical benefits of the sport.

So explody, if you've drank to the point of walking randomly and falling down, does that make it easier or harder to dodge?

I'd say more difficult, due the randomness of my actions at that point. But, I dunno. We haven't actually won a game, yet...

yep, 4 members on the team, each person throws the rock twice, but there is usually a captain (a skip) that stays down the other end to direct the throwers, until it is his/her turn to throw the rocks, then someone else directs...
