Thanks for a great forum. I usually just read quietly but have been thinking about this and thought I'd get thoughts. I ride my mountain bike. I've ridden cyclocross and love it but don't have a cyclocross bike. I've also really got into riding fixed in town to work and whatever.

Are these new interchangeable droppouts on a '29er size frame the way I can get all that down to one bike? with like a cassette and 700c wheels for cross and mountain, and a set of mavics with a flipflop hub for the fixee?

You could get a Surly Cross Check, which has horizontal dropouts for fixed gear and single speed applications and a derailleur hanger for running gears. You can get some fat tires in there for mountain biking too. There are probably other modern frames with horizontal dropouts and derailleur hangers too, but I can't think of any off hand. I think a cross bike will perform better as a 29er mountain bike than a 29er mountain bike will as a cross bike.

Sounds like a good plan to me....sort of tempting really. Not that I'd give up my other bikes though. I've been wondering what it would be like to build up a 29er as a drop bar CX bike. I'd love to be able to fit 2" tires on my cross.

You need two crosschecks. One fixed gear and one geared. And lots and lots of wheelsets.
