I presently use frogs on my commuter, but I have a lot of walking to between the bike and the office.
For that reason and because winter is coming, I’m thinking of switching to toe clips.

I have a pair of toe clips that I picked up for WhoKnowsWhere. I tried them once but didn’t like them because they position my foot about 1 inch back farther on the pedal center line, and it feels like I’m pedaling with my toes.

Q1: Are there different sizes of toe clips?

Q2: I wear size 12 or 13 shoe. Can I get a toe clip that will position the pedal center line under the ball of my foot?

Thanks

This isn't the answer you want, but I share your pain: size 12-13 and toe-clips feel really unstable/too far from the ball of my foot. I wound up switching to clipless for this reason.

Yes, there are different sizes of toe clips. I wear size 11 shoes and the Large clips from Performance were very comfortable for me: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/Profile.cfm?SKU=301&item=37-7600&slitrk=search&slisearch=true. I have rarely seen anything other than "normal" size toe clips sold in retail stores, so you'll probably have to go online for these.

For a DIY solution: When I was younger, but still size 13 shoe, my Dad cut and drilled a piece of plastic for me which mounted between the pedal and the toe clip, effectively extending the toe clip about an inch. We just used longer bolts to mount the clip/plastic chunk to the pedal. Since the greatest force is going to the pedal and not the clip the extra inch of bolt length didn't seem to effect the strength/stability of the clip.

I guess I’ll try the Large performance toe clops and if that doesn’t work I’ll try customizing. If all else fails I can try platform pedals.

I recommend you consider Power Grips. In my experience they work as well as toe clips & straps and can be adjusted to accommodate any size shoe.

Uhhhhhh... you might wanna check the link again. I see four sizes on the page, and I believe I have two pair of the XLGs in a shopping cart now.

Thx for the site, BTW. I find the L toeclips difficult to get into and out of... so I'll keep the site in reserve.

I just picked up a pair of NOS plastic Christophe clips (matching my bike's color scheme and everything)... so I'll give these a shot before ordering more.

I did not realize that your first post contained a link. I thought the XL was underlined, and I thought you were referring to the link to Performance. Thanks for the info.

Keep in mind powergrips are sized...I never knew this until I read about them on the Rivendell site...I too were a 13...I've never tried Powergrips but it seems many people like them....I use either MKS steel clips in XL or cheapo Nashbar Mtn. Bike clips depending on which bike I'm riding...and I can wear about any type of shoe outside of big workboots...and I don't like riding with boots anyway.

I wear size 12. Soma clips work for me. (http://somafab.com/toeclip.html)
