Foo - I stepped down.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Today I stepped down as the Lead Paralegal of my firm. :( There was a situation with a procedure that one of the paralegals didn't agree with and my boss didn't back me up. So I said I was done.
Its pretty sad but I'm actually pretty happy so that I can just come to work and do my thing.
Just so you know my position isn't anything special but its no fun when your boss won't even back you up on something when they said they would. Most people view me as the TIGER against the mouse and this may be but at least you know the work will get done!!!

Here is the kicker THEY NEED ME TO STAY. I run alot of stuff my boss has no idea of doing. I come in at 6am. to run programs before anyone gets here. The women whom has worked here for 21years left in July. I took over MUCH of her job I'm the only one that knows it. So I think it won't be a big deal.

Sorry that you dont have a boss to support you, hopefully, he is going to get the bigger picture when you return on Monday.

I'm proud of you for standing up for what you believe in Snowy.
Foo...ATTENTION!! Present ARMS! Order ARMS! DissssssMISSED!
When working in a law firm (as I assume you do), don't expect your bosses to be polished leaders or managers - it isn't their core competency. You gotta lead from below...by example, as you have done. :)

Wow, your so ever right. Attorneys are not great leaders and I say this cause they don't have the best people skills. They are however good at doing their job.

That sounds like par for the course, People great at their job with no clue as to what happens any where else. I hope there is no backlash against you for it.
I am very lucky that my bosses know what I do and also trust me to get on with it.
My boss asked that I think about it over the weekend!!!
So you'll be on bf more? wahooo, sexa mama!!

This is, of course, true across the board. Try working in a firm run by engineers. :D

Snowy I just did the same thing about a month ago. My head boss didn't back me up as well when I asked for it. He figured I could handle it on my own but it was not MY place to be head boss. My replacement is having a real hard time adjusting (he has 7 years experience) so I have to help him through with it. The thing is, there is so much relief from not having as much stress since the responsibilities let up.
The hardest part of the adjustment was learning to NOT CARE. It was really hard for me to NOT do the paperwork and the numbers (it was being neglected), NOT do to the safety logs, weights/measures and temp checks (again, neglected), NOT take initiative to take care of upcoming events and to NOT pay attention to the losses (losses are at an all time high, a record for my location).
I found that slowly they are coming back to me and "asking" favors. For example, I was asked by my replacement to attend a management meeting just yesterday. I did it as a favor but had to remind myself to try not to get too involved.
The good thing about it all, is that I can easily say when questioned about something not completed: "It wasn't my responsiblity, talk to your assisstant." They are used to me completing special projects.
It will take some time but you will feel better later on. Just do your thing and try not to care. :)
Siu, I hear you on that. I think I care WAY to much and it makes me mad the some don't care like me. My boss asked me to think about it over the weekend and I will. Its will help to get out of here too and clear my mind. :)

I agree Portis. I found myself taking my paperwork home and spending a lot of time on it. That time was not included on my paycheck.
For you Pheard anything!!!! :)
Strong women are so hot.

Man snowy, when are you coming over to norcal! When we ride I swear I'll let you take the lead :)

You're absolutely right, snowy. Take it from one who has been on both the attorney and legal assistant sides of the equation. One of the things any attorney worth his salt should figure out is that it's the legal assistants and legal secretaries who run the place. The lawyers may make the decisions on the substantive stuff, but they're mere consultants on just about everything else. Frankly, it works better that way.
I think that's bull**** that you're boss wouldn't stand up for you. Good legal assistants are hard to find, and loyalty is paramount from both sides. I'd be pretty damned disgusted with her. If you an continue to work with her, good for you. You're more forgiving than I'd likely be in the same situation.

Firstly...I applaud anyone who stands up for what they belive in...now...
I hope your industry is different than mine because in my world when people who feel they are critical to the running of the office "machine" take a stand, then take a step down voluntarily...are living on borrowed time. We hold the motto that, "No one is irreplaceable. No one."
I used to be in your situation in one of my early careers. I went from an hourly employee to a dept manager to a zone manager in a retail operation. When I got no backup from my manager (responsibility without authority - leading cause of workplace frustration) I asked to be moved back down to an hourly employee.
He agreed. The I realized I was making $12/hr when my new peers were in the $7-$8/hour range. I soon found I was being asked to do alll of the crappiest jobs in the place. I was then written up every little transgression that could be found. Finally I was asked to be a "Loader" to "help fill in". This was the crappiest job in the place.
I took the hint and quit. I later found out from friends still in management that all of the actions were deliberate and designed to get me to leave because of my wage.
I have seen the same behavior from bad managers that exist in all forms of business since then. I wish you luck.

I have a friend that had to make himself "not care" about his job so much recently. He's in management and missed his goals for the day(ONE day!) because he took time out to have a team-building luncheon with his subordinates. His people actually made their goal, but weren't able to meet the commitment of both shifts(the other shift didn't and usually can't make their numbers). He got chewed out by his managers, threatened with being fired and was moved to another area for his "incompetence." That, after one incident that may have had nothing to do with their goal not being reached. They were quick to apologize, however, when he sent out several resumes after that. Now he just does what's required of him, waiting to make his escape.
So, anyway, I feel your pain, vicariously through my friend, snowy. Hope things work out okay for you.:)

Not much happened. I talked with my boss and we decided that I should continue to hold my position.
We are going to have a Paralegal meeting tomorrow and get things sorted out. Other then that nothing really exciting.

Always remember the business maxim:
"One oh **** wipes out 10,000 atta-boys"!
So you stepped down without quitting? How did you manage that?
I manage 4 other paralegals. There are 5 of us total. They need me to stay, I was just tired of the attitude I was receiving when we try to follow thur with new procedures. My boss wasn't so great on backing up the procedure either mostly cause she couldn't rememeber it. So anyhoo she wanted me to re-think my decision. I did over the weekend and I'll just keep playing the game for right now.

+1 In the world of business we are all replaceable. Especially when we think we are not. Good luck. Later.
It's definitely a good thing to step down from a position that you throw your life into but don't receive support from your bosses. I'm a receiving manager at a huge store and for a couple months was working 12-16 hour days frequently and after one-too-many tongue lashings and various other signs of management coming down on me for every mistake but receiving no praise for good jobs; finally receiving a "performance write-up" which is active for ONE YEAR. Because of this, I've stopped working overtime and just do my 8 hours and get out. I take the fall for any mistakes my team makes but the managers above me send me to the electric chair anytime the store manager comes down on them. Funny, that.

Hi Snowy. I am glad that you have come to a decision that you will be comfortable with for now. I hope that in your meeting with her she can come to terms with you on what you need to make the office succeed. You have just been shown that you are valued and I hope that you believe that with your experience and knowledge, she might just listen to you this time. Make sure you let her know what you based your voluntary step down on so it will give her the chance to understand how important it is to you that she backs you up.
Good luck to you and go get 'em! :)
