The LHT's bottom bracket is quite low, i'm wondering if you LHT riders have pedal strike when riding on off road trails?

I've done only a couple of miles off-road. It hasn't been a problem, but for obvious reasons you should avoid anything more technical than a gentle trail. Big roots and rocks will spell trouble. Also, the long chainstays mean that you get some serious wheel slip if you try and power up steep slopes. Like most touring bikes, it can handle non-technical off-roading and dirt roads with ease, but its more at home on roads.

Thanks, your response is in sync with other comments I found from past threads. For my next touring bike i'm looking at the LHT, a Thorn Sherpa, or a Gunnar Rock Tour. So far i'm favoring the later 2 for their slightly higher BBs, something like half way between a touring and a mountain bike, so I have the option to tour on rougher terrain.
But I oh so like the price of the LHT!

Why not a Crosscheck?
I switched from an LHT to a Crosscheck and the extra 1/2" of clearance made a big difference offroad. It was also a lot more fun to ride when not loaded than the LHT. The LHT was sweet as a dedicated touring bike, but for other uses it was too tank-like for me.

Pedal strike, yes.
it is not an off road machine, but it handles lots of trail conditions and the like fine. fire roads, most definetly.
LHT out of the box, complete, in 2007, for a 1000 bucks from QBP. it does ride like a tank, but it also lets you take both hands off the handlebars downhill fully loaded doing 45 MPH. even hands free on packed gravel doing 30. LHT for everything but the rough stuff.

Thor29, i'm a fan of the Xcheck, but for a dedicated (off-road capable) touring bike, i'm interested in 26" wheels and long chainstays.

has anyone tried fitting a nanoraptor or other 2.1" tire on their (56 or larger) LHT?
