Advocacy & Safety - Pure Pleasure Ride

Do you ever cruise around just for the pure pleasure of moving and seeing things?

No commuting, no club, no fitness, no errand, no effort, no speed, no distance, no special clothes, no tour, no goal, no destination, no planned route. While all of these can provide and may be done for (often great amounts of) pleasure, there is always some other factor at play. I am refering to pure pleasure cruises.

I do fairly frequently around my neighborhood, similar to an evening walk to watch the sun go down, see the neighbors, kids playing, changing gardens.

80% of my riding.
I do consider mileage though because I have personal mileage goals.
And I mix in small amounts of speed for the kid in me.

Some times the kids want me to stop and let them check out my bike)

Absolutely -- some things never get old. I love just tooling around.

Heck ya, and the best time is in the evening... I think the most fun about doing it is smelling all the various cooking smells in the neighborhood.

I don't put on a helmet or any other cycle specific gear when I do this, I ride my fat tire cruiser and just cruise around.... listening, looking and smelling. Sometimes the smells are really familiar, and I could probably tell you exactly what such and such a house is having for dinner... other times something smells good, but I can't quite pin down what it is.

It's a blast.

I have to say, for me, that a certain amount of speed is necessary for it to be pleasurable.

Yeah man, I can dig it. Just an easy cruise around the 'hoos. No cycloputer, nor HRM, flat pedals, sneakers, maybe bike shorts under shorts/pants, T-shirt or sweatshirt, maybe a jacket, and not caring how fast I go.

Wow, a lot of other folks experiences are exactly things that stick out as memories on mine, dinner smells, whos doing laundry, christmas lights, tooling around, evening, after a rain.

i went for a pleasure ride the other day and once i got all situated and took the bike out to my car to get my helmet, i discovered my wife took my car to work, i wanted to bike so bad i went without a helmet, it was only like 2 miles, it was nicer than i thought it would be without a helmet, i was a little over cautious of cars and obstacles, but the wind felt nice. however, that was the first time without a helmet in like 3 years, it won't be the last probably but it might be another few years before i do it again. i'm no safety nut but i'm a helmet guy.

For the little local rides, I don't worry about it so much... after all, I rode a bike (including 3 accidents) for years and years without a helmet, so I figure a neighborhood cruise can be done without the thing... every now and then I wear a hat, to keep the sun out of my eyes and make my head happy... but heck it is just a pleasure ride, I am not pushing anything... and the wind in the hair feels so good and kid like... Ahhhhhh. GRIN.

Sadly I never do this. I always have to have a reason.

All the time, usually on what ever bike is closest to the door:p typically my SS or a 3speed.
