Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Clydesdale Cyclocross

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Any clydesdale folk doing cyclocross? I bought a cyclocross bike last year because, at my weight, I simply wanted a steel bike that was built to take punishment. I put slick tires on it and rode it on the road to a substantial weight loss. Now comfortable that my weight wouldn't break it, I rceently bought a road bike. I intend to switch the cyclocross bike back to its intended purpose and give it a try.
The problem: when I watch a cyclocross race, I don't see many lineback-type riders hopping on and off the bike. Indeed, the idea of a running bike mount, with my still-not-petite rear landing on the seat, is not pretty. I have practiced some "moves" in the driveway, and I am neither graceful nor quick.
Has anyone given cyclocross a go? If so, any tips for heavy boys?

You ain't the only linebacker -- or lineman -- who wanted to run and cut with the wideouts. I played 12 years -- and all as a center/noseguard -- so, brother, I feel your pain. But don't let that stop you.
If you see yourself racing the other guys, you'll always go home a loser, because the guys who were too small to carry water to practice when we were young turned out to be the 18:00 5k'ers; the top 3 triathletes; the money winners at a bike race. Don't race them. Race yourself. Or rather, race your idea of your ideal self. Let your performance versus your potential guide your sense of accomplishment.
My $0.02.
Or just race to have fun.

^ +1 for dobber's advice. If you aren't quick or cool at first, you won't get that way by NOT practicing and riding! I say go for it and have a great time!

There was a small local race here yesterday. I was going to try it out, but had other commitments.

This is a picture of me at one of the Cross crusade races in Portland last year. It was my first race and I had a blast. I decided to do the race after years of not racing because I thought I had to be a certain weight. Well, at 6'4"/ 265lbs, I was not the swiftest, but I had a lot of fun.
I encourage everyone to try cyclocross at least once; no mater what your size or riding ability. If you are lucky enough to live near the Portland Or. area, check out the cross crusade series, it is a very begginer friendly race.
