Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - fixie conversion

Converting a 60's steel road bike to fixed wheel. Managed to fit a track wheel in the rear drop outs without difficulty, but the axel diameter on a new 700c front wheel seems too big for the drop outs there. Can anyone help?

Yeah, I had the exact same problem. If you use a combination of a reaming tool (t-shaped with a drill looking thing on the end for cutting metal) and some files on your fork tips, you should be golden. The reamer (I love saying/typing that) needs a fair amount of elbow grease, but it'll get the job done.

I'd make sure your frame isn't a collectible worth thousands of dollars before you take a file to it. But don't get your hopes up.

Mine was very close to fitting.. in fact, I thought it was just the new powdercoat that was blocking it from fitting, but about thirty minutes carefully filing and checking solved it.. make sure the axle goes into the same place on each end so the wheel is straight, this might take some tweaking.. I'd use calipers to measure the rim's distance from each fork blade.

The OP's bike is probably set up for the older standard axle diameter on that particular bike, so filing the fork tips will only make it more practical for him to use any wheel he wants.

I'll stick with this one. Either that or replace the fork.
