I signed up for Digital Gee's "Ride Against Paraska-whatever, knowing that my real plan was to ride a solo century today.

I did some planning. I wanted to ride Highway 70 from Quincy CA (my home) to Hallelujah Junction, on Highway 395, not too far North of Reno. 57 miles one way. The Beautiful Mrs. Slim, concerned about my safety volunteered to SAG for me. I loved the idea.

I was going to leave at 7:00 this morning, but I forgot to check the sunrise, so waited until 7:20. It was 30 degrees. Now, here's the first coincidence: I'm climbing the first hill, thinking about Carmen Electra (don't ask). A few minutes later, one ONE Carmen Electra song out of 6240 on my iPod began to play as I climbed the next hill.

Mrs. Slim was waiting for me at mile 15 with hot tea and a muffin. It was now 38 degrees. I had averaged 12 mph to get there. I knew it was the slowest part of the ride. She went on to spend some time with a friend, whose house is along my route. The next leg was a 20 ride to just past the town of Portola. At a Rest Area, Mrs. Slim was again waiting. After some refreshments and wardrobe manipuplation (got ride of all the cold weather clothes except a windbreaker vest, it was in the mid-50s now), I was again off.

The first 35 miles of the ride is hilly and tree-lined. I was now heading our on a high desert. A slight headwind, but not too annoying. About 22 miles to lunch at the turn around. The last 7 miles were into a stiff headwind over Beckwourth Pass, 5200 feet. After a mini-mart sandwich (I really wanted one of those Polish hot dogs going around in the little glass cage), chips, banana and a coke, I'm off. Can you believe it? A tailwind! I was doing 30 mph for a while and averaged better than 20 mph across the valley.

Mrs. Slim met me at the rest area again. Nice to see her. 35 miles to home. Back in the hills. Small tailwind. I stopped for a Power Bar at 100 miles and rolled into my drive way 8 hours 50 minutes after I started. Averaged 15.5 mph, which is pretty respectable for me. 114 miles.

I've done a number of centuries, but this was my longest ride ever by a few miles. I feel that good tired we get when we work hard. I didn't pick up any bungee cords (and there were many) and lost count of the former snakes. It was a great ride for me.

CC,

My bike is an '05 Giant OCR Limited, with upgrades. Carbon fiber. Full Ultegra (it comes that way), albeit some of the cassette is marked "DA" (last year's DA is this year's Ultegra). I have an FSA K-wing CF handlebar, Nimble Spider Wheelset, F'iz'ik Aliente saddle. Don't we just love talking about our bikes?

Between your wife and bike, what else is there that should warrant such attention? :)

Congrats to you for your solo century. Thanks for the report and photos. It looks like primo riding county. I did 53 miles this morning. Cycling is decent around here, but there is no getting around periodic stops, etc. From the looks of your pics, I'll bet that you can ride as long as you like without stopping and decleating. You had a great day.

Looks like you had a great time. What kind of recovery ride will you ride this weekend?

I'm going out after lunch (My usual Saturady Taco Bell #1 combo with a crunchy taco and the senior discount) for a short (10 mi?) ride to listen to some music at a local event. I will take my MTB, however, as I need to get a some miles on it before next weekend, when we are taking a 26 mile MTB ride. I haven't been on it muich.

So you rode 100 miles solo in the Sierras with the temps below 40! You should be a very happy man tody\ay, that is a hell of a good ride especially for a Friday the 13th.

Thanks to you all for the kind/supportive words. Actually, I am very happy with how good I feel today. I have already send e-mails to my riding buddies looking for a ride tomorrow. Mrs. Slim was very happy with her Subway sandwich along the way (we don't have one here), her visit to a local bakery (coffee and sticky buns) and getting to visit with a couple of friends.

Let me understand this... Mrs. Slim drives 100+ miles to SAG you, and all she get is a Subway sandwich and sticky buns?!!? Either she's something special, or YOU are! :D :D :D

CONGRATULATIONS:D ! Sounds like you had a great time and the pictures were great too. I loved riding the high desert when I was stationed at March AFB. I didn't get the outstanding SAG support you did though. WELL DONE....WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO

I hope you know how special your wife is?
1) She is willing to do SAG support instead some other project.
2) She is capable to do SAG support and not get lost.
You are a lucky man.:)

Nice Report. Thanks and congratulations! Most of my centurys have been solo, and I prefer long solo rides I think. If I was faster maybe I'd like long group rides better!
