wow i decided to expore the eastside bike path rather than ride along the westside where i mostly do my riding and let me tell you the bike path sucks big time! I guess because im used to riding on the westside bike path i expected the eastside to be the same, down by the south street seaport its not too bad but as you continue uptown, there are sections where it seems like you're riding on a dirt road instead of a paved road, they are dirty, alot of detours because of ongoing construction, some sections didnt even have any signs to tell you where to go. Up by the 30's you have to get out and ride thru regular traffic streets in order to get back on the bike path...i dont know maybe im just complainting too much or maybe i should just stay on the westside but i really thought with all the bike organizations in the city and all the rallies that have been going on in city hall for better bike paths in the city that the eastside bike path wouldnt be in that condition.

The best part of the Eastside bike path is the Speedway which is up above the Macombs Projects. It's a straight shot up to Dyckman making it one of, if not the, fastest way to scoot up to Inwood and from there on up to The North Bronx. There are hardly any people using it. It runs along side the Harlem River Drive. If you head up Central Park West and then continue along Frederick Douglas it's a pretty fast way to go. Riding on the Eastside is not terribly pleasant for the most part.

East Side is ok. Just a change of pace.
But you get bragging rights to say you biked all the way around Manhattan.
As they finish the Greenway, they'll probably upgrade the East Side. Don't expect it to be as nice as the West Side, but better than it is right now.
The City's working on sections in FDR Park, negotiating with the UN for access, and possibly the ramp for the temporary detour on the FDR will eventually become part of the Greenway.
The West Side section really is the city's premier bikeway. The only other path I know of that even comes close is the new Shore Greenway, in Brooklyn. But even that doesn't have the amenities you'll find on the West Side.
Check out the Manhattan Waterfron Greenway Web SIte (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/mwg/planning_4_2_1.shtml) to see what the City has planned to be completed by 2008.
