Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bottom Bracket

OK, so I've got a road frame which I'm converting into a fixed gear. I want to get the BB, and I know that I need the Italian threaded bottom bracket 36x24.

Does this mean that I can use the Campy Record Pista BB (Italian Thread)? This BB has a 111mm axle. Will that work with my road frame? Also, if I buy the Campy BB, what does that mean in terms of what cranks I can use? Do I have to buy campy cranks to fit a campy axle?

The Campy BB will work, but make sure your cranks have an ISO taper (Italian rather than Japanese or other crankset). If it's JIS, Shimano makes an Italian threaded BB.

cool and thanks for the reply. so what's ISO taper anyway? and JIS, i've been wondering what that means for a while too. i think that the shimano bb is way cheaper than the campy one btw. probably a real good idea to check that out.

ISO and JIS have to do with the angle (?) of the square taper on the BB. Those are the two standards. Basically, if yo go with a Campy BB (ISO), you can use a Campy, Miche, or (I think) Gippiemme crank. With a Shimano, Sugino, or Hatta BB (JIS), you can use a Shimano, Sugino, or Bulletproof crank.

Of course, there are others that fall into each category, but those are the basics. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Close. The ISO and JIS both use a 2 degree taper. The difference is in the width between the flats of the spindle as the taper starts, or the width of the conection point in the crank arm. I believe that the jis taper starts at 12.9mm, while the ISO starts at 12.7mm.

to ave a few ducats and keep Denmark odor-free, eliminate the fog factor and check out the Miche cranks and BB (the BB is around $25!). Very durable and reasonably priced. odd-thing: 135mm BCD. Most track cranks are 144. But worry not! There are enough rings made by Miche.

Yeah, I definitely love my Miche cranks. Plenty stiff for my liking, and very nice quality.
