I'm a newbie to Winter Cycling but a regular over at Classic and Vintage. I just finished my "Snow Cycle" to ride on snow packed roads and snow mobile trails. You can read more about it by clicking here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=237130

I thought I'd post a few pictures here to seek your comments and any suggestions on winter riding. I live in the NH mountains where we have between 80 and 150 inches each year. This won't be for commuting, just exercise and fun.:D

The only problem I see is the generator... those sidewall generators don't work well in the type of weather you sound like you're planning on riding in. It would be better to get a hub generator. When you get water and ice built up on the tire, the generator won't be spinning at the normal speed, and light output will be down. Plus, you're going to be going at lower speeds, anyway, that will further reduce the power generated.

Thanks for the thoughts about the generator/light combo. A few folks over at C&V also pointed that out and I wondered about the effectiveness. I found the combo at the town dump, cleaned it up, and it worked, even the bulb. I thought it looked cool so I decided to mount it. I'll need to work on another light. It gets dark early here in the north country. Lower priced LED's are not bright enough and while I've kept this project on a tight budget, maybe it's time I sprung for some real bike lights. Thanks!
