This just in from the Galveston Daily News:
GALVESTON — It just wasn’t his day. A man was jailed on Monday on charges of stealing a bicycle from a store on Broadway. The arrest came at the end of a chase that crossed the city.
Store manager Brian Bazaman of West End Cycle and Lock Company in the 3800 block of Broadway said the man entered the store, grabbed a Schwinn cruising bike and fled. Store staff gave chase on foot but were unsuccessful.
But a salesman for a supplier to the shop had better luck. Approaching the store in his car, the salesman saw his clients flagging in their chase, and surreptitiously tailed the thief to a pawn shop at 25th Street and Broadway.
Police were summoned and arrested a man, who managed to escape. “He was left in the car while the officer got some details and kicked the windows out and escaped,” said police Capt. Brian Riedel.
But running down 25th Street, the man apparently had the misfortune to run by Bazaman’s brother, Harvey, who was returning to work from lunch.
“He had his hands behind his back and he’s going like greased lightning,” said Harvey Bazaman, who is director of the county legal department. “He goes past us, and Curtiss (Brown, the county’s director of community services) and I saw that guy was cuffed.”
Bazaman said he directed pursuing police down Avenue K, where the man had fled. It was only after the arrest that Harvey Bazaman said he learned the man was suspected of stealing a bike from the family store.
“It was just an amazing set of circumstances that took place,” Brian Bazaman said. Riedel said the man sustained minor injuries crawling out the broken window.
The identity of the arrested man and the charges he faced were not available on Monday.
In all honesty I cannot imagine swiping a bike from this store. Most of you on the forums have more bikes than this store does :) This isn't as much a bike shop as it is an antique store without any antiques.
Glad they got him though...
