Advice: do not smell them to check. Just wash, wash, wash.

I have a Falcon Westminster tourer that was free, a set of Shimano 600 pedals, a Shimano 105 derailleur, and some guy is bringing me two Peugeots tomorrow. I may have to give him beer for those though.

What do I have to do to get random people to bring me free bikes?

I picked up 3 free 12 speeds about a month ago (Fuji Del Ray, Schwinn Traveler, and a Panasonic DX2000). I gave the Fuji to a friend, and fixed up the Schwinn and Panasonic. Both are currently for sale and in excellent shape.

Free bike stuff from a family member is always tight. The best part, is that the giver is usually psyched to see their old stuff used and appreciated by younger (and more poor) family members.

My uncle, who used to race in triathlons (and just tore up the master's tri he just entered) hooked me up with all his old bike stuff, which was sitting in his basement, just collecting dust.

I scored:

Look KG86 with Ultegra 600 (frame was bad, though)
Boxes upon boxes of Campy Super Record componentry.
A Batavus Professional frame which I'm building up with said Campy componentry.
Tons of Park bike tools
A whole slew of other vintage bike parts, including a Wolber aero wheelset, a Profile freewheel disc wheel, tons of vintage aerobars, and more.

My freebies are lame, i simply get new stuff from my store, or a company rep at my bike store. I got a boatlad of pearl izumi shorts, and some gore bike stuff. I thinks it's damn cool get used/old stuff passed down, as there's usally a cool story to go along with the goods. Also, like doctor who mentioned, the ex-cyclist in the family get psyched to help out someone enjoying their past-time.

neat-o!

i'm curious to see the jerseys under the white one. i have a bit of a vintage collection going, but they're all wool and aren't from anyone in particular.

the best freebies i've been lucky to receive are my ksyrium wheels (enough said) and a jacket that i traded w a courier friend for another one that was given to me but was too big (so warm, so comfy). oh and lots of mechanical help from my darling partner... :D

Your grandpa gave you that stuff?

I tried talking this old friend of the family into giving me his Merckx fixie. He wasn't going for it.

Be excellent to each other, and party on.

The guy is a builder, and the fact that I am 34 and don't look like a hipster (of course, I've no idea if you do!) may have helped.

What do I have to do to get random people to bring me free bikes?

Get an uncle who used to race in the 70s. Worked for me!

I got his custom steel track bike, complete with Cinelli bars/stem and a Dura-Ace 10mm pitch crankset.

Now he asks me about my rides all the time and I report back about how awesome the bike is, and everbody's happy.

You may have to marry her to get that stuff. It might be worth it though.

Rapid Wheelmen...its a bike club...

i love names like that...its too literal and wordy to be 'cool', which in turn makes it cool. like 'energetic peddlers' or 'efficacious motion'.

Had a friend of my wife give me a Columbus Tre Tube, 59cm Bottechia road frame w/chrome fork. Campy fd and utegra 9 speed hub. He said it was better than "throwing it all in the trash."

I found a bunch of tires and some forks and other random crappy bike parts outside a bike shop on the street at like 9:30. Didnt have that much time or space so I took two tires and a pair of risers that they had hurray. Its going to make me add some closed bikestores to my route home now ;)

My LBS gave me this cool Pinarello saddle to hold me over until I can find a permenant replacement for the ass hatchet.. they also had a blue and white striped selle italia turbo, NOS, that they were going to give me, but the colors just wouldn't have worked out.

EDIT: I also got this Serfas Aria Ti brand new from a LBS in exchange for a 12 pack of mountain dew (about 5 bucks).. those things retailed for ~100.

Shiiiiiit, Zach. Hook it up!

Edit: I guess working at a shop and getting freebies from a billion customers made me completely forget all of the sick tires, components, and even frames I've gotten just for being the guy who cares about used but not abused things.

They are still around. They are still cool!

You also have a DALMAC hat. DALMAC is a Labor Day ride from Lansing to Mackinac. I have done it the last two years, both times fixed gear. It is a blast and I highly recommend it!!!
