A speedometer measure the number of revolution of the wheel and calculate the actual speed of the bike. (i.e. 20 mph)
A cadence meter count how many pedal revolution you do per minute. (i.e. 100 rpm)
The cadence meter is a bit like a tachometer so have an idea at what speed you should shift. It more efficient to keep around 80-100 rpm pedal stoke with lower gear then 40-50 rpm pedal stoke with higher gear. More spinning less mashing.
Not sure which are good ones. My cheap one broke recently ;)
EDIT: we usually refer to it as a cyclo-computer (at least that what I called it)

I'm using the Cateye model with wires and a cadence counter. It goes for around $40.00. Do get one with the cadence function. If you don't want the wire, add about $100.00 and up.

Sigma Sport BC1606L is a good computer with Cadence. It sells for $25 on Amazon.

Cateye and Sigma Sport are both good cyclometers. I have one of each and they both work fine.
Your riding preference will indicate which model number is best for you. I prefer the thicker wires on the Enduro model, but have not experienced any problems yet with the smaller wires.

my bike computer doesn't have cadence, and i wish it did, but if you don't need cadence it is a really awesome computer. it's the cateye mity 8 and it's served me well. it has a lot of functions, two trip meters, can be set up for two bikes, etc., and it's pretty tiny. probably less than $25 for it, if you get it on ebay or from a discount place online.

VDO makes a good one with cadence for about $90.
Cateye, Sigma, Astrale and Specialized are all good brands as well.

I have the echo II with cadence and wouldnt want to do without. Better to get cadence now, instead of saving a few bucks and realizing you want a new computer a week down the road.

get a gps with a cadence with gps you dont have to calibrate wheel size

I'll put it this way, if you already know how to set the clock and calibrate the computer to your own wheel size, it's a piece of cake. The physical installation is simplicity itself; the instructions can be a challange. I did it with two computers, so you can do it. To me, it's highly useful. If you have a professional trainer, it's less so. If you do have such a trainer, have him install the computer.
