Rides and Races - NYC riders - Tour de Bronx, Sunday Oct. 22

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone doing this ride on their SS or FG? Apparently, they get a few thousand riders every year, so should be a blast. I'm planning on doing the 40-mile route starting from Bronx County Building at 161 Street & The Grand Concourse (10am check-in). I'll either take the subway or ride up from Central Park if others want to ride up.
The price is right - registration for the ride is free, as are lunch and snacks.

Well, if you're coming from Manhattan or Brooklyn, the County building is closest.

Did you do the NYC Century several weeks ago? I remember riding part of it with a guy on a blue IRO.
edit: Nevermind, I saw your bike pic, different bike.

I'm thinking of doing it. Maybe we should form a "fixed group of fun", bring booze.
I'm in...got set up a meet time for GAP, then head out to the start. I think I'll be on the orange bike.

Anyone interested in meeting up at Central Park and riding up to the County Building start?
Are the folks coming up from Brooklyn passing near Central Park?

Engineer's Gate - on the loop at 5th Ave/90th St. entrance, is a pretty good meet-up point. From there ride up to the north end of the park and out.
I think it's about 5 miles to the County Building start from Engineer's Gate. To be on the conservative side (in case anyone has a mechanical), I suggest we meet at 9:25am-9:30am, and push off at 9:35am sharp. 25 min to get to the check-in should be plenty.
If we can get a few people (say 3 or more), we can just ride up without trying to meet up with the guys coming from Brooklyn - unless they're passing through Central Park (but I would guess they're going up the east side).

i think i could meet up there at 9:25-9:30am. i'll be coming from brooklyn as well if anyone wants to hook up for the ride into CP - i start near prospect park.

If you're fast enough to do the 40-mile route on a SS/FG bike at the stated pace - "15 mph on flat, open stretches", you're plenty fast enough to ride up to the Bronx with me.
With timmhaan and acavengo, we're up to 4 riders for a Central Park meet-up. Anyone else?

If you guys leave GAP at 8:30, does that get you to Engineer's Gate by 9:30 pretty easily? It would be sweet to have a whole crew of SS/FG riders heading up from Manhattan to the Bronx.

Guy at my LBS who lives in the Bronx and will be doing the ride said that there are hills, two of them and he described one of them as being sort of tough. I guess we'll see.

I think lots of people here have done this ride on one gear, so I'm not going to sweat it. Besides, a little out-of-saddle climbing will give the sit bones a few minutes of rest.

Cyclists comprise a small minority as it is. I see no reason to further subdivide that minority based on what you ride, unless you ride a bent ;)

It is fun to pile h8 on other people on bikes, esp fat people on hybrids! :)
Where is the meet up in brooklyn? I'm coming from bensonhurst. W 7th & bay pkway. Can jump on ocean pkway and head into pk slope ppk easy. Places changed and acquired names since I lived here, so please find a simple place to meet up. Now if I can register using this sidekick......
Ch0mb0, where are you dog?
We are meeting at the gap (grand army plaza) the tip of prospect park at 8:30. Then going to pick up more riders at Manhattan bridge entrance and meet up w/ the guys up at 5th ave and 90th street.

dang, i gotta take our kitten into the vet tomorrow which may mean i can't make the ride. poor little guy can't walk. life events have kept me away from most of the big rides this year, so i guess i'm not surprised to miss this one either. :(

That sucks man, but get the kittie in. My cat has had two back leg operations after she managed to completely f*ck her legs and was not able to walk. Get that **** checked out.

sorry to hear about your cat, man. that sounds terrible. we just took darwin in to be neutered and just yesterday he started limping around and now he has a lame leg. it just kinda drags around behind him. we feel horrible since he still wants to play but can't.
Tim: bad news. I was looking forward to meeting you.
As for the Brooklyn contingent: do you guys all know each other? Can I tag along? One strike against me: I won't be riding the singlespeed (the conversion is only a week old and I don't think I'm up to 40 miles yet). What route to the Bronx from Grand Army?
just meet us at 8:30. Route wise gotta pick up the rest at Manhattan Bridge and Central Park, streets will be pretty empty though.

For those riding up to the Bronx (County Building start point) from Manhattan, several of us are meeting at Engineer's Gate at 9:25am. Engineer's Gate is just inside the Central Park entrance at 90th St. and 5th Ave. We'll meet at the graveled area next to the loop.
Some of the guys/gals riding up from Brooklyn will swing by around 9:30, and then we're off.
Shishi, I was thinking 7th Ave up to 145th St. bridge. Sound good?
that seems best since the County Building is @ East 161 and grand concourse.
That's great. Thanks. See you tomorrow.

I'm tired and my legs were cramping 300 yds before the Botanical Garden, but it was a great ride ('cept for all them hills after the last rest stop). That's about the time I sounded like I had tourettes climbing all those hills. Congrats and good to meet you all!
