General Cycling Discussion - See what you people have done to me

I started seeing the mtn bikes at costco thinking "hey a bike would be cool." After a couple of months of research here and otherwise I settled on a 2001 Sirrus as my entry point.

After 1-2 months I'm already thinking of my next bike. :rolleyes:

I've told myself (and my wife) I'm waiting a year to see if I stay with it before I get bike #2.

Although I admit I do have road bike envy when I get out riding on the weekends :p

The most interesting thing is when I started this I thought I would be a big tire super shock mountain bike rider instead whenever I go to the LBS I'm drawn to looking at the road bikes. Who would have thought?

Anyways thanks for all your help and advice here, I think..... ;)

I think it's because road bikes are sexier !.. but that just may be my opinion...

i'm doing the same thing as you.. I inherited a 13 year old Centurion 6 speed road bike a year ago.. and after riding the hell outta it for the past year.. I've finally talked my wife/financial advisor into letting me get a new bike... I just have to ebay a bunch of junk around the house and save up.. I have about $500 so far, and hopefully I'll be able to get an '03 when the go on clearance in October or so...

Isn't everyone? :confused: :D :) That's what I look at. I rarely look at mountain bikes.

They did it to me too, with a little help from friends. My 1st post here was asking what $500 mtn bike i should get. A few weeks later i'm the owner of a $1300 stumpjumper, and within a few more i've added enough upgrades and accessories to put me at the $2000 mark. I still can't figure out how this happened. :confused: :rolleyes: :eek:

You see one of the warning signs when you have an addiction is blame and then their of course is denial (thats the one I prefer) welcome to CA

I am the opposite I was a commuter , then a roadie and now I am only a heartbeat away from my fist MTB I really can't wait

One of my first posts here was a complaint about not having enough money to buy the road bike I wanted. Back then, I was looking at getting a Giant OCR2 and was short about $500 and my parents refused to lend the money to me :D

So after a year of working part time and saving every penny, I'm riding a sexy Cannondale and thinking how every penny saved was worth it.

I think that is the "mystic of Cycling" you never get satisfied with what you have...

We didn't do a thing - we're innocent. We were just out riding our bikes - and having a really good time. And then we wrote about it on the internet. Then we went and rode some more - and had an even better time - then wrote more about it.

Oh man, I know just how you feel. I'm always thinking about THE next bike and how great it will be. Unfortunately, kids in college and home improvements seem to come first. It's always great to have a dream, it's just funny how THE next bike dream changes from week to week...

well i just have to comment...

actually my big addition is not how really how much MONEY i spend on bikes (actually i save by bike commuting - no car for almost 2 years!), but how much TIME i spend riding... i mean my vacations are all about cycling (ok, skiing in the winter, plus climbing too) and i'd rather be on the bike than at work or at home or whatever... that's what i'd call addiction.

P.S. i am in the middle of my training and will be a certified mountain bike guide from the German Alpine Club soon, so i may actually get paid a litle for this addicton! (i'm leading an 8-day TransAlp tour in August)

TELL me about it! I started off perfectly innocent a couple of years ago, commuting 20 miles round trip on my DAUGHTER'S SEARS mtb. After a couple of weeks I figured I would stick with the commuting so I got a Giant Cypress. So far so good. Then I discovered this web site. Within a year I had replaced practically everything but the frame on the Cypress, converting it into a 9sp triple 105 heavy cross/commuter/tourer. After just a couple of years I now have FIVE bikes, not counting my daughter's.

It's like a computer virus. Heck, it IS a computer virus. It's being spread by computer, right?

LOL you peeps are great. Did my first early morning weekday ride today, which is tough for me cuz I'm not an early riser. Once I got out there it was fun except it is an exceptionally fiercly windy day here today in L.A. I didn't realize how hard it was blowing till I had to ride home straight into the wind.

I'm doing my best to stay with it so I can reward myself with a full on roadie maybe next year.......maybe by the I'll know an Ultegra from a 105 from a Sora, compact from regular and steel vs AL. :confused:

Till then I'm gonna keep pedaling and try to drag some friends down with me. :p

I started around 2 years ago. Since then I've spent approximately $2500 on cycling. Among the side effects that I've had since taking up regular cycling...1) I stopped eating fast food. 2) I avoid using may car. 3) I stopped smoking. 4) Blood Pressure, Heart Rate and Cholesterol have all lowered quite a bit. 5) I don't like to be inside, I would much rather breathe fresh air. 6) People give me funny looks when I ride my bike or walk to go on errands.

Admittedly I'm a wreck! I need 12 steps! I've been off the bike for a week with a nasty case of bronchitis and I'm going through more withdrawal than I had when I stopped smoking.
