Foo - Phobia Survey! We all have them!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Errr, what survey? Eeeeeekkk!!!!!!
(I should mention, I have a fear of threads & emails indicating an attachment that are, in fact, attachment-free.)
I am scared of phobias. I was bitten by one once.

(needs to be a multi-select survey)
My major phobia is heights. It's not paralyzing, but things like standing at the edge of a building rooftop is freaky. My dad can't climb a ladder his is so bad. It gets me most acutely when skiing: being on a chairlift will wig me out every now and again. I fight through it because I love to ski too much to stop...

Anyway, real answer:
phobia - an anxiety disorder characterized by extreme and irrational fear of simple things or social situations; "phobic disorder is a general term for all phobias"
There are some things that make me very tense and nervous and some situations I will reasonably avoid, but I can't say I have any extreme and irrational fears of anything.
Tom Stormcrowe

Actually, we all have fears that are unreasonable, or phobias, but it's only a phobic disorder if it causes so much distress that you have extreme difficulty or no ability to function or work around it.
The only thing I found that I'm almost afraid of is deep water. Anytime I can't see the bottom, I get a little nervous. I wouldn't call it a phobia, though, because it isn't really extreme or irrational as the pup pointed out. I still go swimming in the deep.
We have nothing to fear but fear itself!
I have an irrational fear of burning to death, not that I'm afraid to die... but that's gotta friggin' hurt and I can't stand pain!
I love pain, so I have an irrational attraction to fire

Wait til i finish the stalk and close in for the kill. Got the meat hooks sharpened, got a spiked metal ball gag and the eye lid protactors so you will be forced to watch. I will teach you fear and I think the costumes and sound track should make it irrational.
Hmmmm, I don't really think any of those apply to me. Public speaking, maybe. I don't really like having to do any kind of formal speech, acting, or reciting. But I have no problem getting in front of a large group of people and making a complete a$$ out of myself. As long as it's like improv and not some kind of formal speech thing, I'm ok.
Definitely have Chionophobia (Fear of Snow), or atleast a strong dislike of snow! :p
And lately, Didaskaleinophobia (Fear of Going to School), or again, a strong dislike of going to school! :D
And maybe some Gynephobia, but that's a given. :p

The ocean. I am a very good swimmer, used to compete as a matter of fact, but the ocean scares me like nothing else. I'm not sure why, because I don't believe I fear death. The one time I almost choked to death my thoughts were completely of my family and friends. Still though, I find swimming in the ocean to be terrifying.
I also fear big spiders, but only those that are severely poisonus. A friend of mine got bitten by a brown recluse some years ago. Not fun.
Oh yeah, I have Vestiphobia too. Yep, that's an image you all need in your heads! :p

I'm afraid of the dark. Seriously. Blind, pitch-black darkness is one of the two things I am afraid of.
The other is really big moving objects. It doesn't matter if they're living creatures or inanimate objects, but stuff like elephants, giraffes, cargo planes, hot air balloons, strip-mining equipment, tower cranes, cruise ships, etc. really freak me out.

You realise that you're standing on top of a chunk of rock that weighs 13,170,556,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbm and is moving at roughly 67,000 mph and you're not even strapped in...

KT, Did ya vote the survey? By the way, I had to limit the categories to 10, so I had to keep them a little broad. Thise commenting in with off the option choices, I'm also running an Excel program, so I can track those ones as well.

Crackaphobia?
Whitaphobia:D.
I'm scared of non-death defying heights. Like being on a ladder 6 feet up scares the hell out of me, but walking on the roof of the WTC or riding across a bridge is fine. If it's high enough that I'll be killed if I fall I'm fine with that - it's the grey area in between with years of rehab that scare me :) I may one day skydive (though I happened to have come across a bunch of skydiving videos along with some accidents - oi!).
Scared a bit of rollercoasters - when I was younger I tried to jump out of one. My dad grabbed me by the belt on the way down, I was terrified! I'll still go on one but I don't enjoy them.
If I'm stuck in a crowd for a period of time I start getting antsy - I like having an out. I don't think that's a phobia, more of a self preservation thing :D
The big roaches creep me out. Had one crawl in my hair when I was asleep and another under my covers at my old place. When I see them I still get the heebie jeebies.
I voted 'height.'

Panic attack in public, can't escape? Re banjo in the woods)
Actually, this is more along general lines due to the choice limitations.
MMACH 5 I don't see a choice for "Fear of banjo music, in the woods"
I don't like crowds, but it's not a phobia. Child molesters and death are my phobias.

Considering what follows hearing banjos in the woods, I checked "Being exposed to a disease." :p
However, I think you are incorrect in the assumption that we all have phobias, (or even unreasonable fears).
It only lets me vote one. I need to at least select 4 of those.

I was stung by a swarm of yellow jackets multiple times a few years ago. I have calmed enough now that if I see one in an urban setting, I will not jump sky high like I used to. But if one of them touches me, or I see one when I'm hiking, or if someone else nearby gets stung, I will run away terrified no matter where I am. I don't care if I'm eating lunch with the Queen of England, I'm running like hell.

Flying inscets that sting like wasps, hornets, bees etc... NOT mosquitos though. I have allergic reations to bee/wasp/hornet stings. Not real bad, but they are probably the only thing on earth that I stay far far away from and make the hair on the back of my neck tingle.

Same here. If I cant feel the bottom I get nervous.

I'm afraid of my shadow....because its always choking me.... *best sol rosenberg impression*
for me it would be bee's. I had a bad experience when I was a kid with Yellowjacket's. I stepped on an underground nest near a tree and was surrounded. It took me about 3 blocks of running top speed and ripping my shirt off to get rid of them and when I got home there was still one in my shirt *shudders* *whispers* there everywhere......

Heights?
No. It isn't heights. Most of the ones here are less than 15 feet above the water. Have you ever ridden a bicycle across one?
You only have about 15% of the surface area to be in contact with that you do on a solid surface. It is far too easy to slip - and if you slip, you're going to go down, and if you put a hand out to break your fall, there's a good chance you'll kiss a couple fingers goodbye. I haven't fallen on one yet, and I try like heck to keep that record intact.

<edit> - dang EP. You ruined my fun again.
scorpions.
Specifically scorpions and not as part of a class of things that I just can't stand.
I used to live in a cottage where there would be the occasional scorpion that crossed the ground-level threshold. I never saw one in my sleeping area, which was about eight inches higher than the rest of the floor. I have not lost the habit of shaking out my shoes before putting them on.
Actually, we all have fears that are unreasonable, or phobias, but it's only a phobic disorder if it causes so much distress that you have extreme difficulty or no ability to function or work around it.
Usually I'd just wait for the scorpion to leave or the cat to come and bat the scorpion around. It would either get batted out the door (no more problem) or be disabled enough that I could launch it outside with a broom and chop it to bits in the garden with a long handled spade. Don't ask how the cat managed. I don't know. I had a back door that wasn't very convenient but if I didn't I'm not sure I'd have been able to work around it.

I don't have any of those phobias...although the thought of death by drowning FREAKS me out.
One of my friends, though, has a snake phobia. And not just real snakes--on tv, on paper, even cartoons.
Another friend of mine is equally afraid of butterflies and moths. Go figure.
...although the thought of death by drowning FREAKS me out.
Hmmm, yeah, drowning would suck. I wouldn't call it a phobia for me, I like being in the water, but of all the ways to die, drowning would seem like one of the least "comfortable"
