Pacific Northwest - Hawaii People - How About That Earthquake?

So, where were you when it happened? I was still in bed, half-asleep. At first I thought it was a large truck - I live right by the freeway, so it's not too uncommon to have a large truck rumble the house. Then it started to get bigger and bigger, and it dawned on me that it was much too big to be a truck. I was still groggy, and for some reason, I thought my first priority was to turn off the air conditioner, which I did. Then I went upstairs to check on my wife and daughter - they were alright. Then I went outside to see if I could see anything out of the ordinary. That's when the aftershock hit. I was standing next to my car and it was rocking back and forth. Crazy!

Thank goodness it didn't happen on a weekday, as the roads would have been gridlocked. And I'm grateful that it served as a reminder to me and my family to have a disaster plan in place for these kinds of catastrophic events.

Glad it wasn't worse.

With Mt. St. Helen's cook'n I'm thinking I should carry more than a small mask on the bike. What sort of disaster plan do you have SprocketMan?

My aunt was in Maalaea, Maui in her condo when all Hell broke loose...she said there was a big wiggle, then the whole concrete building bounced up & down for about 10 seconds...the aftershock about 1/2 hour later was almost as strong...no damage, but the water in the bay was churned up and dirty for the rest of the day...the next day it rained buckets.

But seriously, after the quake, my wife and I had a discussion. We now know where to meet, who will pick up our daughter, and how we will contact each other. Lucky thing it happened on a Sunday, because if had occurred during a weekday, the roads would have been a total mess.

I was just reading "Bicycle" by David Herlihe in my bed when the house began to shake. I too looked outside to see if it was a truck, nope. So I just layed back in bed and continued reading, enjoying the light vibration of my bed.

That was about the extent of it. It was more the rains that made it hard for me to commute the next morning...I made it though, down Haleakala Highway in that pouring rain.

Any of you Maui guys see me? The insane person going down Haleakala Highway at 8:30ish on a bicycle? ; -)

In the shower, so I missed most of it. (always happens, dang it) Fortunately, I was late getting up to the mountainside that morning, or I would have missed all of it. At least the power didn't go out here. :)
