US full of Internet addicts: study (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061017/tc_afp/afplifestyleinternet_061017180234)

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."

The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.

Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.

"In a sense, they're using the Internet to self-medicate," Aboujaoude said. "And obviously something is wrong when people go out of their way to hide their Internet activity."

According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.

Well are we?

Me addicted? Nah...I live in a place called Denial. I'm addicted to cycling. And at various times...addicted to Bike Forums. Hmmm...Maybe that's why I'm always broke. Too much money spent on bike stuff.

So if you do something a lot you are addicted? I guess I am addicted to the internet. I'm also addicted to breathing, working, driving, riding, waiting on my kids hand and foot and many other fun filled activities. Sign me up for the nearest Internet Anonymous meeting. (hopefully they have an online meeting somewhere :p )

Hi my name is Stacey, I'm an addict. Internet, coffee, cigarettes and weed. I hate it when life interupts my addictions. I used to be a chronic ***********, but found I couldn't surf the itnernet with one hand... something had to go!

You're pursuing pleasure.

You know you love me. Even I love me...cept when I don't. I know you sit there pining for me all day long, thinking of all the things you'd like to do to me, a long walk in the woods, a gentle embrace as you handcuff me, tying me to a stake and skinning me alive, leaving whats left for the coyotes.

I have a reading/writing addiction, and the bookstore not only operates at regular hours, but they frown on people who live there and only occasionaly buy anything.

Our libraries suck in Atlanta, but they keep regular hours anyway. My brief two semesters at Oglethorpe found me haunting the library and computer lab...so you can find me at a computer or with a book under my nose 16-18 hrs. of the day every day.

I'm exaggerating. I think.
