Can anyone recommend a set of wheels for my '06 Poprad? I would like to quickly switch my street tires to off road. Currently have the Bontrager Select which came w/the bike. Not looking for anything high end yet thought I would seek some other opinions.

Are you CX racing on this bike or riding it off road on rough trails? If the later perhaps you want to use the Selects for your road tires and (at least for the rear wheel) get a stronger wheel for off road.

I should be able to figure this out, since I own one, but what is the rear spacing for the Poprad? And is that standard, or wider? I assume This is something one needs to know before buying a new wheelset?

the snarky answer is to go to your bike and measure...just go from one side to the other, through the wheel as seen from above.

What kind of hubs do you have stock? MTB hud will be spaced 135, road 130. It will almost certainly be one of the two (some bikes are 132.5, in which case you could do either).

I use Mavic open pros as an extra wheelset, with Ultegra hubs. Cheap, strong, good enough for my clydeness (230 or so).

You need to measure your dropouts. My 2006 Poprad has 130mm rear spacing. But it's a 9-speed and doesn't have disc brakes. (Don't know that this might make any difference to rear spacing, but...)

Anyway, point is: YOU need to know before you go shopping.

As for the comment about the Bontrager Select wheels not being strong enough for actual cyclocross and off-road use? Poppycock. I now have a full season of CX racing and lots of rocky off-road trail riding on the wheels and the rear is less than 1mm out of lateral true! I've been over lots of rough, shake-the-teeth-right-out-of-your-head terrain.

I also have the Bontrager Select wheels (with Bontrager hubs, I think). Last year I bought a set of Ritchey OCR road wheels, so I'm probably 130. I'll report back, though.

I bought a set of Ultegra/MA3 wheels from Performance. I had intended to sell the stock wheels on ebay, but for the time being have kept them. I was worried about the lowish spoke count, but maybe unnecessarily.

I run a set of Open Pro's/Ultegra hubs on mine for CX duty

I too use Open Pros (32-spoke) for dirt with an '06 Poprad. They're great. Some of the trails I've ridden (sometimes accidentally) are probably better suited for a front-suspension mountain bike -- lots of rocks and crap. And, I weigh 240. Nonetheless, the Open Pros stay true. I ride the Bontragers that came with the bike as switch-ins for slick-tire road riding. They too have also held up -- the predictions of my fat-boy doom on those scanty-spoked things haven't come true -- but I was scared to take the Bontragers off-roading.
