Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - miche pista vs. campy road...

setting up the new rig..
i can either use a miche pista crankset in the front to match my 1/8" cog in the rear, or i can mismatch and ride on 3/32" road cranks (they would be the 'nicer' campy record cranks). in the end the price is about the same (cuz i would need to buy the miche bb, and i already have a longer campy bb). i guess i have two questions:
1) how does miche stand up to campy in all the usual factors (weight, stiffness, etc)?
2) how is riding a mismatched 1/8" drivetrain (with a 3/32" chainring)? im used to straight 1/8".. would i notice a difference even?

get the miche. they're nice and your chainline and overall drivetrain set-up will be stiffer/better/quieter

miche cranks are nice, but their bottom brackets are terrible. you won't wonder why they're so cheap. if you get the miche's, get a campy or phil bb for them.

have you considered campy road cranks with a miche .125" track chainring?

I have a Phil Wood crank bearing with adjustable cups, just like the Miche crank bearing.
Because of the adjustable cups, I now have a perfect chainline.

I'd go with the Miche crank bearing for the adjustable cups and the perfect chainline.

I got my "perfect" chainline by laying a 15" metal ruler on edge against the flats of the chainring (with the chain removed) and then adjusted the cups until the ruler touched the flats of the cog.

Silence.

I'm running a 1/8 ring and a 3/32 cog right now on my KHS Aero because the 3/32 cog and lockring were JB Welded on by the previous owner and I decided to get a 44 tooth 1/8th ring because I knew I'd be retiring the wheels soon anyway and the 48x16 combo that came on the bike wasn't cutting it for the street. It's kinda noisy, but it's also a crappy, worn cog. I can't wait for my new hubs to get here.

I would go with something 144bcd if you can afford it or 130bcd if you really want to be cheap. There are a lot more cheap options in 130 rings than 135. You just don't have many options in 135 1/8 rings.

basically i just want something nice and without too much hassle. im in germany and currently have no bike to ride, so...

i can get the miche cranks+ring+bb for $173... or i could go the more nebulous path.. i have a campy 110mm bb already. not too sure how the chainline will line up if i get road cranks. and i hate the look of a sprocket on the wrong side of the spider.

i need a quick rundown on campy bcd history.. is the current road standard 135? did it used to be 130? at some point in the 80s wasnt it 144?

what ever the bcd you should be able to find a 1/8" ring for it and rock the campy

try looking for ta rings

both the campy and miche cranks will be 135mm BCD
eith the 110mm bb you'll probable be running the ring on eht inside.

so if i get campy road cranks, would i still want a 107mm bb?

hmmm.. 102mm is the shortest bb width there is, right? what if the chainline is too wide? screwed? sheldon brown says the standard road double chainline is 46mm outer and 41mm inner. since i need something around 44mm that would generally mean i shoot for a bb a couple mils shorter than it normally specifies. i guess the new 102mm campy standard is out for fixed use then unless one wants a slightly-off chainline?? :(

ps- i dont wanna throw down for a phil bb over something like chainline.

Be careful with your BB selection if you go Campy. I ride Centaur cranks (shut up, they were grey and pretty) on a Sugino 102mm BB and it's on the outside of acceptable chain line. I'd really prefer a couple more mm in. I'm looking at Campy BBs now because I think the cranks would fit a little better on them, but they also require me to purchase another tool to install it.

yeah i think i might go jis so i have more selection. im tempted to get the miche setup.. but i would be better off buying road cranks since then i can use them on my summer tour, which will <cough> not be fixed.

The REcord pista BB and the Triple BB are different. The pista BB is symmetric, the triple is asymmetric
