Bicycle Mechanics - Transfering grupo from one italian bike to another, hit a snag

I bought a 56cm Fuso made by dave moulton to rob the campagnolo grupo for a 59cm De Rosa frame that fits me. Both bikes have shimano botom brackets, but the De Rosa was previously being used with a Dura Ace grupo. My problem is that when I went to put the campy cranks on the botom bracket thats already in the De Rosa, the small chainring hit the chainstays and when I looked at the frames side by side I could tell the BB shaft on the De Rosa was shorter.

So if I take the Fuso's BB and put it in the De Rosa, is it safe to say I'll clear? I guess its just news to me that shimano/campagnolo used different spindle lengths.

For your question, I think it's more of a taper issue, not a spindle length issue. Use the BB that the cranks came with and you should be fine.

I don't want to touch the issue of mixing Campy/Shimano BBs and cranks with a 10-foot pole (lotsa flame wars there)... but you can expect that if the other BB worked in the old frame, it'll work in the new one (barring a radically different chainstay shape, which is unlikely on two similar frames).

Double cranks are designed for anywhere from a 103 mm to a 115 mm spindle, depending on their exact shape. There's no hard-and-fast reason why a specific crank "ought to" take a specific spindle length. No generalizations are really possible here.

In other words... yeah, swap the BB and you should be good.

Long story short, Sheldon Brown himself sez it's okay to mix Campy and Shimano BB/cranks, but don't go back and forth (it's what he calls a "class B" fit).

Simple one, that... Pick up your favourite caliper/measuring tape and see if the Rosa is wider than the other frame at the point where the edge of the small ring will be. If it's not, you'll be okay with the BB switch.

Of all things I failled to realise that the fuso is not italian threaded. The BB in it does not work in the De Rosa. Oh well, now I'm trying to track down a campagnolo non drive side cup and lock ring. Anyway... just wanted to post that.

If both BB's are Shimano, just use the spindle from the Fuso on the De Rosa. The cups should be the same since they are both Shimano, no? If the shells are different widths, then you will have to get a different spindle.

I'm not surprised that the Fuso is English-threaded; isn't the Fuso an Anglo-American bike? That is, a bike made in America by an Englishman?

And isn't Dave Moulten a member of our fine BF community?
