Hey all,
I'm converting an old "clunker" MTB as a single-speed CX/hoopty bike.
Any suggestions for where i should start the gearing? 39x17?
39x17 is something that i can manage on my road bike pretty easily. What about off-road/CX?
Thanks for any tips.

i rode 39x20 at hillsboro accidentally, I intended 39x18 but put the wrong wheels on the bike at home. I have ridden 39x19 at all the previous pdx races. I think its better to be undergeared than over geared. At the end of the race you will be faster, i think.
I would say 17 is stiff---but ofcourse it depends on your strength, I know its not unheard of for guys to run 39x17, im just not that strong.
