OK, after much research, reflection and rolling of the dice I'm now pretty solidly looking at Belize for my next bike tour in January/February 2007. I've read some reports online and a female friend went there in January of this year for some cycling of her own. From what I've heard it meets a lot of my requirements.
SO. Have any of you been there? If so, what parts did you visit? Did you camp? I'm also interested in hearing general thoughts about Belize from those who've actually been there. I'm already aware that it's relatively expensive and that the overall value is much less than Mexico, Guatemala, etc. I'm also aware that most roads are not paved. I'll be travelling by mountain bike with camping gear for 3 weeks (possibly 4).
I'm also considering the option of flying into Cancun, cycling around the Yucatan, south to Belize (potentially by bus) and then explore Belize. The areas in Belize/Guatemala that interest me are the area around Caracol, the Hummingbird Highway, the coast from Belize City to the far south where the Mayan villages are, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve, Placencia, Caye Caulker and a few other spots in between including crossing the border into Guatemala to Tikal.
Has anyone cycled from the Belizean border near San Ignacio to Tikal in Guatemala? North of Tikal to Uaxactun?
Thanks for any input from those of you who've been there ...on bikes or otherwise.
