Bicycle Mechanics - Any cons to using a braze on FD with adapter clamp over just a clamped FD?

Hi all,

Bit of a strange question. I have a store credit at a place, and I need a clamp on FD. They don't have a 34.9 clamp, which is what I need, but they do have an adapter for braze ons, and a braze on FD. I want to know if there are any negatives to using the braze-on adapter combo, over just a clamp on FD. They have ordered more 34.9 clamp FDs, but they are unsure when more will be in stock. Thanks

None that I can think of. On the plus side if you ever switch frames and have a braze on with adapter clamp you can get a different size clamp if needed.

It won't be as strong? I have three bikes with the adapters and they certainly look to be as strong an attachment as the built-in clamp models.

One advantage of the adapter is that braze-on derailleurs are cheaper so, if you ever upgrade, the adapter clamp will let you buy a cheaper component.

With the addition of the extra fixing bolt makes for two to tighten instead of one. But I think you'll have an easier time adjusting the cage to run parallel with your chainrings as a result.

Another advantage is being able to reuse a perfectly good braze-on FD on a non-brazed bike. You might like to upgrade the race bike and migrate the still useable bits to the commuter, por ejemplo.
