I'm talking about my schwinn varsity road bicycle.

My rear derailleur broke today and these components are cheap. I'd like to get a new bike, but my college student budget won't allow it. I was thinking of slowly upgrading parts until I've got a respectable bike.

So, I'm lost with all of the compatibility issues involved with changing derailleurs and speeds on the bike. Right now it's a 7spd's in the back and 2 up front. I'd like to get ten in the back and a triple up front. I'll need new shifters, because the current ones aren't really road bike shifters. They're on the handle bars, on opposite sides of the stem.

So what am I going to have to replace and with what parts specifically? I'd like to do this as cheaply as possible.

Post a photo of your shifters, and hope for charity. I'm sure someone here will help you out with an economical solution. I have nothing against cheap bikes, but it's not worth hanging Toyota parts on a Yugo. Seriously.

Go find an old (1970's) Varsity, it's heavy, but it will go forever with allmost no maintainence and it looks loads cooler than the new Varsity. EF Schwinns are forever.

If I were in your shoes, I'd replace the deraileur and leave it as a 7-speed. The money you will spend on upgrading the Schwinn could be spent on a good used bike. You would be amazed at what gets sold at garage sales and thrift shops.
I understand as a student you don't have a lot of $$$ so repair the Schwinn and pedal it around until you can scrape up a few bucks for a good used road bike.

True that.

Find the best price you can on a new derailleur, and I'll bet several guys on here could locate a complete used bike for the same price.

Why send good money after bad?

Check the local bike shops. Most have a box of old deraileurs that have been taken off old bikes that have been upgraded. They might be willing to give you one, or sell you one for $10 or so. I know I have.

I'd rather get to school on time than ride a 50lb bike . . .

I tried but it would'nt let me. I felt CAPS were important to get the point across. Repair? Sure. Upgrade? Waste o' cash.

lol.. Old Varsity's are probably about 38 :D Not bad for me, but I do live in some dead flat country.

There are Lighter, semi-vintage choices out there, and dirt cheap, look around.
