What does "any functional media" mean exactly?

anything you can jam in spokes that won't cause injury, death, or any other form of humiliation for the recipient.

I have a feeling that if Shants takes part, he will win the "Can't post that card on the forum" category.

Doesn't space monkey have a name? Hero animals need a name. The poor dog the Soviets fired out to space first was called "Lajka"... I still know off the top of my head.

TRaffic Jammer

Sam is the name of our Hero

Sam, the Rhesus monkey, after his ride in the Little Joe-2 (LJ-2) spacecraft. A U.S. Navy destroyer safely recovered Sam after he experienced three minutes of weightlessness during the flight. Animals were often used during test flights for Project Mercury to help determine the effects of spaceflight and weightlessness on humans. LJ-2 was one in a series of flights that led up to the human orbital flights of NASA's Project Mercury program. The Little Joe rocket booster was developed as a cheaper, smaller, and more functional alternative to the Redstone rockets. Little Joe could be produced at one-fifth the cost of Redstone rockets and still have enough power to carry a capsule payload. Seven unmanned Little Joe rockets were launched from Wallops Island, Virginia from August 1959 to April 1961.

thanks for the enthusiaism everyone. it will be some kinds of awesome.

clarifying-
"functional media" means it can actually fit and be ridable in a wheel
"space monkey" is the theme. you can interpret this any way you'd like, or you can go ahead and ignore the theme. the theme is supposed to help stimulate some ideas and give direction. hopefully being a test pilot can resonate with you bike folks, if not, no big.
"sam" is in fact his name. there was also a "ms. sam" that flew only 9 miles high or something like that. they were sweethearts.

i don't suppose the organizer(s) could arrange it so that east coast people get sent cards from the west coast and vice versa? assuming it would require minimal effort.

regardless, i'm totally into this.

its much easier to just do resend spokecards out as soon as they come in. and trying to predict who will follow through and who will not and whose cards will get lost in the mail is hard.

let me get this straight...

we can design anything we want?
and it needs to be the size of or smaller than a post card?

scotthorrigan
10-22-06, 12:11 AM
can we also do multiple cards? say, one card per catagory?

I have tons of designs I'd like to make into spokecards... I don't want to limit myself to one...

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be somehow space monkey themed though....

final clarifying:

all spokecards must fit within a 6 by 4.5 inch envelope. if you make one that's bigger, it won't be included in the exchange, but will get documented and be considered for an "award."

you could send out as many as you'd like, but each entry must enclude a self addressed stamped envelope. because it is random, you could get one of your own cards back. don't go overboard, two is probably enough. will i accept three? yes. four? probably. more? ... pick out the best ones or create your own event.

there will be judging, but the categories will be created on the fly. the prizes are also yet to be determined. this is kind of a "bonus" thing that isn't to be taken all that seriously. i will have the end say in this, but there will be help. if anyone has ideas for categories, please post them. if anyone would like to donate something for an award, pm me.

if you make a dud, it doesn't matter. someone will get it, and you'll get one back. the easiest way around this problem is not to make a crappy card.

you DO NOT have to follow the theme if you don't want to.

cards will go out randomly.

deadline is december 4th.

how hard can this be? get out your photoshops, prismacolors, and rubber cements. don't forget there's a front and a back. don't be shy about sending your card in EARLY either. i can't wait.

LóFarkas

You WILL scan all of the cards and make a flickr set or something, right? RIGHT??? At least post the best ones here. Please?

I'm sure it's fine, baby. It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean, generic reassurance, etc.

Is it OK to post this to the livejournal.com bikepirates community, or is it a BF only thing? I'm sure a lot of people in there would want to contribute.

On a related note, my friends and I just spent 3 hours making cards for the exchange.
