Hi-I'm jumping into the fixed gear world for winter training--and learning a lot from this forum. Hope to get a Jamis Sputnick soon and plan to add (yeah! I know) brakes. Saw the $5 NYC Bike Drilled Alloy MX Brakes--Orange. Does anyone else use them and are they functional? Thanks in advance.
One more quick question re crank length. On my ride bikes one is set up with 170 , the other with 172.5 (my perfect size falls somewhere in the middle). As the Jamis is not "track geometry" and has a standard height bottom bracket, I was going to go to 167.5 cranks. Is this the way to go?

they should work fine, at least if you have cable and housing routed properly. as for the crank arm length, i would just go with a length that fits your leg size and not worry too much about bottom bracket height. If you have a really long inseam then you might want to consider something a little small, but even with 175s, pedal strikes arent that much of a deal unless you corner really hard a lot. I have a friend who has huge pedals along with 172.5s and a low bb. he had a bunch of strikes at first, but he just learned his way around it and learned his bike, and he hasnt struck or gone down since.

I'm going to say that they probably won't work. The reach on those brakes is huge, and the Sputnik has a road fork, which means it doesn't need huge reach. I bet that if you put it on, the pads would nearly hit the spokes. Get a regular dual-pivot brake from your LBS and use that instead of wasting $10 by going to the internet for a product that won't work.
Having shorter cranks helps a lot. I went down to 165's recently, and it is great to not have to swing wide in order to make a sharp right. I'd say 170's at the most.
