Southern California - No time to ride :(

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello all,
About 10 days ago I got my official results that I passed part 3 of the California credentialing board state teacher certification tests in science (CSET) (I took the chemistry and the physics test and passed both). I am currently studying 2 - 3 hours a day for the general science subtests on the 4th of November - the problem - I feel like a lazy butt - I have not riden (except for Sunday) for 3 weeks -
I get up about 5 AM for work, work until about 3, take a nap until 4, study from about 4 - 7 pm, dinner, and by that time it is 8 pm and I am asleep by 10 - thankfully this is over in about 2 weeks - then I can ride from 4 - 7 again.
Any sugestions on getting at least a few rides in during the week - or should I get say forget it for now - it is only two weeks!
Mandy
BTW I have been spending about 1 hour playing dance dance revolution - that is a workout in itself - part of my load bearing stuff I need to do each week!

how about some time e.g. 30 mins to an hour on an indoor trainer?

Some here will tell you to make the time. I have a pretty busy schedule myself and I can tell you there just aren't times you can ride. Of course if you are this busy for a long period of time, there is a problem and you'll crack.
The best thing I've found to do is put the bike on a trainer, get the nashbar bookstand (so you can read a book) and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Back when I was in college nothing would clear the mind better than a 1 hour ride.. The toughest part of a ride is getting dressed... Once you are dressed you have committed to the ride..
A little time off the bike is no big deal as long as you're happy with the arrangement. I haven't been on the bike all week, and all the DDR you're playing is far more exercise than I've gotten this week.

I agree, once you put on the riding clothes eespecially the helmet and cycling shoes thats it, you're going outside to ride
although one night 3 weeks ago after a long tiring day at work, I got dressed for my usual night ride at 9:45pm, bibs, helmet, gloves on, put on my sidis on while sitting on the leather barcalounger, in front of the TV...next thing i knew i woke up at 4:45am ah well got up and went for a morning ride instead.

I was off the bike for almost the entire time I was in college, both for the BA and for the teaching credential. I promised myself I would get back to exercising after I graduate and I did. I've got bad news for you, though. After you get your teaching credential, you'll have 2 more years of mandated studies (equal to about 32 units of college) before your credential is cleared. It sucks, but as my professor always said "if you can't handle it, you could always try law or medicine"

Since I have a one-year-old son, I don't have much free time, so I ride the 34 miles round trip to/from work 2-3 times a week.
But if it's only two weeks, I'd say don't worry. Just get in a good weekend ride in between. :D

48 units post grad, 2 - 3 nights a week for 2 years (about 3 3 hour classes). I am giving myself 1 year before I start considering my MA in education. The major difference when you are teaching and in grad school is you still have maybe 2 - 3 nights off during the week... it should be harder when you are married.
Right now is a very hard time - because my future depends on doing well on something, and in that regards all my attention should be on obtaining that goal - even for the two remaining weeks. I understand how the system works, I have 8 friends who teach highschool, and as we know the first year is the worst - once that is over things mellow out. Teachers have a hard few years after starting a profession - that is life - but then who can say they get out at 3 pm and can ride for 2 - 3 hours each night if they wanted - certainly not the ones who are working 9 - 5 + commute and overtime...
To be honest I am 100% happy to be back in the classroom - it is where I am called to work - and honestly I have no idea what I would do if I was NOT a teacher. I used to go to school 8 - 5, ride 6-8, sleep 9 - midnight, then work and do homework midnight to 8 in the morning - it is possable - if you want to ride it is possable. Getting my lazy a** on the bike is the hardest thing for sure...
