What say you about the Soma double straps? Good value? Awesome? Utter crap?
Also, Harris Cyclery's site says they're laminated, but there's no mention of it on the Soma site. So....are they?

i love mine. Had em a little over a month. I can write a review if needed with pics. No splitting. Some scratches. But i ride them everyday 7 days a week and they have take the abuse like a champ.
review please. Do they hold tight when set and not tightened???

I've loved mine for every minute of the past month or so.
They stay nice and snug and have held up perfectly fine so far.

I believe so.
I'm not entirely sure what laminated straps look like in comparison to non.

just to add. They are noit gorgeous. The leather scratches and the buckles dont have the craftmanship of toshi/mks/erribi. But they are strong and so far bomb proof.

sitting on my floor in a pile of parts under my new frame--where are my ****ing wheels superspokes.com!?! Will write a review as soon as I can get them on the road (won't work with pedals on my beater). So far can vouch for the scratching, just running them through the buckles once lets me konw they aren't gonna stay black for very long...

Clips/straps are sooo on my "thinkin' about it" list these days. I haven't used them since early 2002.
I almost busted my as* TWICE at the coffee shop this afternoon with my cycling shoes. You know, the SLIP_2_FEET + GRIP routine.

some one needs to make laminated double straps that are pleather instead of leather. that **** does not stretch at all like leather, dont have to worry about it breaking down in the wet conditions, and its would be vegan friendly. we all win on this one.

and they'd be like, say, $20. I don't blink an eye at a $1500 disc wheel, or a $10,000 carbon fiber frame (I can't afford either, but I understand), but $100 for double straps? WTF?

while these arnt vegan.. 36.00 bucks is reasonable for how durable they have appeared to be.

actually the rubber / plastics used to make "pleather" do break down when exposed to grease and oil and the elements because it is vinyl..secondly you could always get some old binda canvas straps or some mks rubber lam straps two then just tape em together
those uh sakae? something like that laminated rubber straps have held up for over a year now probably with 0 problems

OK, I ordered a set this morning. I'll report back with pictures once they're in and installed.

well in my experience with pleather it lasts yeasr instead of months. ive had a pleather belt for over 8 years now for snowbaording and skateboarding and its still the same as it was one i got it(except the colour, but that doesnt matter) i agree that they break down but everything does. and what are these rubber lam straps. i have never heard or seen of those. and im kinda intreged by them now.

A belt sees considerably less wear than a set of toe clip straps.

OK, so I just had an idea and now have to ask - does anyone know where to buy the buckles for toe straps on their own? There's a material I want to play with...

My mom's a leatherworker (ie westen leathercarving, belts, bags, etc).
I've been meaning to give her some specs and see what she can do...

with the curious exception of Steve K's post i'm really pleased to hear positive reviews. because once i pay my rent and get another paycheck, i'm definitely ordering these.

why yes i did. i'm mattio on the nycfixed board... were you part of that fixed crew that i wound up not joining cause i was hanging out with two friends? i was riding a little black iro w/ red-walled tires.

Hey Kevlar! I started a thread last week asking how to reuse the Kevlar bead in my old tires. Homemade Kevlar toe straps anyone?

I got some a couple days ago and like them so far. To my untrained eye they are not obviously laminated, though I wouldn't rule it out.

laminated just means that there's a layer of laminate (?) that looks plasticy sandwiched between two bread layers of leather (unless i'm wrong, which i don't think i am). so i'm not sure how some people can think it's laminated and some think they're not. were some of soma's straps laminated and others not? what's the deal?
no it just means there are multiple layers stuck together.

one of which is non-stretchable laminate. no?
i was under the impression that laminating was to prevent stretch. what's the point of it if you're just sticking two pieces of stretchable material together?

I was riding my friend sloppy robots bike the other day and they just were not working foe me...not sure what it was but I just wasnt feeling them. Maybe it was because I was riding the other side of the pedals.

well you get what you pay for... i have had mine for a few months now...
they started off nice but as the months went there has been some considerable stretch, and i dont think they are laminated...the buckles seem to use a lower quality rivet than my mks single straps do...now when i ride them even though they are tight to my feet when i pull on them to skid or stop i feel a stretch not the most reassuring feeling but so far no disasters...for being cheap they work rather well but im sure a higher quality pair will last a lot longer and hold a lot tighter...but until them royalty checks start rolling in for being an extra on Whos the Boss im gonna have to live with them.
