Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - riding brakeless saved my head

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
it kept me from charging down an unfamiliar hill and ending up in the hospital like my friend.

Riding with a brake saved my balls. A car shot out of an intersection and I skidded and hit the brake and didn't run into the guy's door.

I tend to think that an inexperienced user of brakes might be safer if they can skid than if they had a front brake, because of the risk of flipping in a panic.. which could cause more trouble than just running into something. Really depends on the situation and the rider.
The one thing riding brakeless hasn't saved is my tires.

That's why I run a ****ty front brake that will likely explode before locking up the front wheel.

My front brake has ABS.....it can't lock up or flip the bike over.

For me it was the same as veggiemafia, a car shot out into a 4 way intersection. If I did'nt have a brake I would have t-boned a 4Runner.
I hardly ever use it, but I like having it for those oh ****e moments.
i dont even get out of bed.

i'm imagining this all.

If you know what to do, you'll run out of finger strength before you lock the front or go over the handlebars.
Just start out braking as normal and then move your body as far back as possible as you get to full strength.

and yeah, brakeless may chew up tires, but its only 10 bucks like, what...every two months? i mean come on. unless youre riding brakeless singlespeed and have to use your foot to stop, you shouldnt be going through tires (and shoes) like every couple weeks. a cheap vittoria zaffiro or something should hold up well enough untill it's thread starts to show. and they work better if they arent the "super grip" kind. just get some slicks or something. either that or you can just win races and get them for free like i do. :P

I ride without a brake because it makes my bike lighter, and has less drag... somehow. and by my calculations, I save 0.0094553% of my energy.

Anyone who flips over their bars (from grabbing too much brake) doesn't know how to ride a bike.
edit: unless you are on a 45 degree slope or something crazy, but still, flat to pretty flipping steep should not be a problem.

Or, they're just not used to braking. If you are used to leaning forward to start a skid/skip, and you grab a fistful of brake, you will probably go ass over tea kettle. Know what you're doing, and learn to use your brakes kiddos.

This coming from the man who insisted that the best thing to do about red lights is charge them, attmept to stare down any cross traffic and if that fails "swerve with traffic".
I can only imagine what he would be like with a brake.

damn, that's nice. what kind of tires you getting for free over there?
mostly hutchinson and vittoria tires- nothing special but pretty nice especially for a fixie. and all i need is a rear so i can just get one and im set. they hand those things out like candy at events like starcrossed and stuff. (if you podium, that is)
i spent the money for a brake on a handjob.

hahahahahaha
that was part of my incentive to convert to fix and start taking care of my bike in the first place...had broken spokes, wobbly wheel, and maladjusted brakes on a multispeed freewheel in a hilly town...and people want to harp about people riding fixie 'brakeless'???
****, I (along with many of 'braked' comrades out there...freewheel OR fixed) was certainly more of a menace on the road then than I am now...matter of fact, if fixie riders are getting tickets for not having brakes, then cyclists and cars should all get routine stops for not only adequate brake adjustment, but for proper display of brake use as well

I find that crappy brake pads (those cheap hard stock ones) help with the situation mentioned above..
Because the pads are so crappy, they don't bite and thus just slow you down instead of endo-ing.

Sorry that post was so absurdly out of touch with reality that it was quite memorable and pretty much permanently discounts and other absurd safety ideas you may have.

which post...why don't you explain?
especially since you like misquoting...why don't you dig it up?
another big thing that I put a lot of emphasis riding a lot is eye contact...especially in areas where there are four way stop signs, or you are running a red light...again...the key is to let the driver know that you see them, and that you are focused on them as you make your decision...let them know that you are actively making the decision to claim right of way, or steal it from the driver (great tool for when the yellow light just turns and you've decided to go)
annother big thing is positioning through red lights...I usually get as far to the left side of the road as I can so that I can maintain speed but swerve right if there is an approaching car...I look left first, then right...if the left is clear then I look right, and if the right is clear I go. If either way is not clear, you can swerve with the traffic of the car that is approaching you
that wasn't so hard.
first stare down and attempt to "steal the right of way" if all else fails swerve into moving traffic to avoid getting tboned.

riding WITHOUT a brake def makes me ride less wrecklessly
I find that wreckless is very much different than reckless...
I personally prefer wreckless. I run a sh**ty ass brake and usually have 35+ lbs of stuff in my panniers. The brake makes one looong steeeep downhill more bearable. I rarely skid with my commuting setup.

ok..now to your post...
where in my post does it say anything about the 'best thing to do about red lights'??? maybe you should reread the whole thread (I would say post the link, but I think no one cares but you)
where does it say to 'charge them'??? and staring down cars never fails...I didn't say that
you can take phrases out of context, but you will only look like.....
you got ME on the mind!!!!!!!.....get off of them doggie!!!!! lol
attmept to stare down any cross traffic and if that fails "swerve with traffic"."
where do you get never fails from. You clearly suggest running lights without stopping and attempting to stare down drivers. You then suggest and only slightly less dangerous backup plan since you are approaching so fast that stopping for the light isn't an option.
My only point is without a brake you are reckless as ****. God can only imagine how you could be worse? Not swerve if the car keeps coming?
teiaperigosa
10-23-06, 10:56 AM
it's not that stopping is not an option...I'd often rather not stop tho
where do I get never fails from? cause it never does. if someone sees me about to go (I'm only 'about to go' if I know I can make it, regardless) and they make eye contact with me and then proceeeeed to look me in the eye and try to run me over, ...first I will see them and avoid them, but they will have a bigger problem on their hands than waiting the extra half second to press on the gas pedal
your point is mute...you have no idea how I, or other gully brakeless riders ride...you ain't a city cat anyhows mr. gA
Oh I see you are actually claiming that it never fails. I though you where saying I was mistating your postiont by saying you claiimed that.
I hate it when my point is mute. I really prefer vocal points.
