A bike that was just given to me is a Red Schwinn Jaguar built on December 1, 1960.

It has a Schwinn Approved 3 speed hub made in Austria, but it doesn't have a shifter. The indicator chain and bell (I think that's what they're called) look like those found on a Sturmey Archer AW...

Will a Sturmey Archer shifter work with this hub?

Is the hub as reliable as a S-A, or at least close?

Darwin,

The Austrian Schwinn-Approved hubs were built by Steyr (sometimes spelled "Styre"), and according to the Schwinn Service Manual, "Componets for Schwinn Approved Styre, Styre, Brampton, and Hercules are interchangeable with Sturmey-Archer components."

Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Graz, Austria, was only one of several firms that made copies of the S-A 3-speed hubs, particularly the S-A AW hub. The S-A shifter should work just fine.

Thanks for the info Stan.

I had heard that some 3 speeds were S-A compatible, and I hoped this was one of them.

To answer your second question, Darwin, if Steyr Daimler Puch's hubs are as robust as their framesets, your hub should be every bit as reliable as a genuine Sturmey Archer.

Stan,

I have a Bendix Torpedo coaster hub that has what looks to be an S-A Bell, no indicator chain. Should the S-A indicator chain fit that too?
