Help! So I got ambitious this weekend and decided to overhaul my hubs and my freehub body for the 1st time. I bought this bike used last spring and have never overhauled the hubs. After riding in the rain last week, things felt a little rought so I though I'd probably better change the bearings, clean 'em out and regrease them. All went pretty well until it was time to get it back together.
I kept the washers for each side separate like the Park website says, but when I put it all together the cassette sat too far to the right and the chain wouldn't shift off of it (it would bind against the slight protrusion from bolt holding my fenders on. No problem, I think. I can fix this. Maybe I actually screwed up keeping the washers together so I played around with the various spacers and found a combo that seems to center the wheel in the drop outs, give me as much clearance with the cassette as before.
Only problem is it seems like EVERYTHING in my drivetrain is out of wack now. BTW, these are older LX 7 sp hubs, and RD and FD are LX of same vintage and I'm using barcons (indexed rear, friction front). I can't shift all 7 cogs in the back without rubbing on my FD on the inside or outside. No matter how much I tweek the FD, there's no position where it'll shift through all 7. I've started playing with the adjustment of my RD, but I thought I'd better stop and ask for help. What did I do and will I ever have the courage to buy loose-bearing hubs again? Help!
