Touring - Fenders for 700x35c tourer

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a stainless/chrome fender that can accomodate a 700x35c tire. The frame is a Giant touring. I suspect this is the kind of thing I'll need to fit at my LBS, but I thought I'd ask. I do not have brakes yet, and I'm now leaning towards cantis, but I only want to buy them after I get the fenders (for clearance).

Stainless pretty much means Berthoud. I understand there has been change of ownership of the fabricator of these in France. but there are several dealers who probably have the stock you need.
Try Peter White or Wallingford. As an alternative, Honjo aluminum fenders are both high quality and very light and also available in a 700x35c-compatible size. Try Velo-Orange or Jitensha Studio for these.

Aren't the Honjo fenders aluminum?

I have the Gilles Berthoud stainless steel on my 95 Schwinn Transit, purchased from Wallbike. These cover 32c Schwalbe tires, and are the 40 mm size.

My only complaint was that the mount for the front fork didn't work well, so I fabricated one from a piece of aluminum. On a touring-specific frame you probably have a little more room and this will not be an issue. These, once in place and adjusted with rubber washers,, are tight and quite. They don't have even a hint of a rattle in them. I like the struts for the fenders a lot better than others, since they don't stick out past the fenders, but rather wrap around the fender and connect at the fork/chainstay braze-ons.

There is nothing cheap or cheezy about the Berthoud fenders, and they look great.

(1) SKS mudguards are available in silver as well as the cool black/purple colour. I like my SKSs.

(2) If you find the right gear in the wrong colour, you can get chrome spray paint for less than $10 from a hardware or paint shop. Of course, this would scrape off in a hurry.

(3) 2nd hand - is there somewhere in your area that recycles old bike parts?

(4) Asian imports - lots of metal mudguards in China, Vietnam, India. Don't know of any sources, though.

I wouldn't get 50mm mudguards for 35mm tyres. You can get 45mm ones that look a little neater while still giving you enough cover on the sides.

If the SKS ones ever get bent, you can restore the shape easily with the help of boiling water.
