I've been looking at bike porn for weeks now, and I've noticed that there are TT bikes that are geared and some that are fixed. Why is this? Only thing I can think of is that there may be separate categories and also that some find one gear is all some people want to use; by choice if you will.

the fixed tt bikes you're looking at are probably pursuit bikes.

There are some people that like to do road TT's in a fixed gear. A friend of mine rode the GA District TT on a fixie. Most courses are fairly flat so why not? OTOH, there are some TT's that do not allow fixed gear bikes.

Ha ha, that is encouraging. I'm getting into fixed-gears lately and the only biking I ever did before was "go to 7-Eleven" rides. I'd like to think I'm not a hipster so pretending to be a bike messenger is out. I had to think of what I wanted to do...

yeah, I remember him telling me about that fiasco and then showing the adjustment to me. Unless they have changed their ways, I would avoid Leader.

Those links to other threads are akin to the bloody videos drivers-ed shows you to avoid drinking and driving. I'm gonna go ahead and just cross Leader off my list, seems like it's a 50/50 that you'll get a frame that is usable and one that isn't. If you're unlucky and get a bad one...Well frankly, I'm scared of that dude (I'm fragile :( ).

Are there any companies that offer similar bikes in fixed-gear that won't involve crazy people? I was originally looking at regular track steel frames but since I'll just be attempting to go really fast down empty flat roads I might as well give TT bikes a look.

as far as affordable ebay aluminum, i would look at those fetish cycles. i was skeptical about them until my friend terry started racing track with one this season. he loves it. he switched from custom steel to it... he compares it to handling and weld quality of the aluminum bt track frame.

also, www.chucksbikes.com has some super affordable aluminum track frames that look good for cheap aluminum.

The rules say you just have to have two brakes. How many gears has nothing to do with it. If the promoter tries to stop you get an official and have them clear it.

fixed gear TTing is big in the UK....along with TT racing in general.

Correction to peterm5365 - USCF rules are only a front brake for TT.

I use a fixed for my local TT series. I cant compete against the pros that occasionally show up, but we are now getting enough fixies that show up that we have our own competition between us.
