Some friends lent us a Santana tandem to see how my daughter and I like it. It's a little small, though, and I was wondering if anyone has a good source for a long (150mm?) 1 1/4" stem, preferably with a lot of rise. Until we get our own tandem, a new stem would make this one much more comfortable, and the 1 1/4" size seems to be a little tough to come by. Thanks!

Cheers.

Santana makes a 150 mm stem. The 1.25 diameter is a Santana exclusive. Not sure of the rise.

my dad's cannondale mountain tandem has one also, threaded not threadless, not sure of the year though, about 8 years old. some of the cannondale road bikes did also with the alum 'sub1' fork.

We don't have a Santana dealer in town, and Santana's website is a little vague about how to go about getting a stem from them. I sent an email to Gear-To-Go Tandems to see if they might have something. Their website lists a 150mm X 35° stem, so we'll see. Thanks galen.

I had the same issue when I purchased a used Cilantro. My LBS ordered me a piece from Nitto that allows the use of 1 1/8 threadless stems on the 1 1/4 threaded fork. Any LBS can order this for you from QBP, or I'm sure some of the online tandem specialty retailers can send you one.

Santana marches to a different drummer than other tandem companies.
1 1/4" stems, 160mm rear hub spacing, special front der. mounts, sweet 16 wheels . . .

There is a contact link at the bottom of the Santana web site:

(800) 334-6136 or (909) 596-7570, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time. We love talking to cyclists, and have found that a phone call is usually the fastest way for you to get the right answer.

You can order directly from them - I just ordered a drum brake, cables, and bar end shifter.

I think the OP has a threadLESS fork -- I have a 1 1/4" thredED steerer on my Trek, and love my Nitto piece like you have, but I don't think it's what the OP needs.
