I was hacking a lung on yesurdays lunch ride. It got worse farther north I got.

Pending air quality, I'm gonna ride again today at lunch.
Uh, maybe not so good idea.

it wasn't bad when I left work, but when I got out into the wind, the air got really dry and was iching my throat.

Dry we can deal with. Smoke/ash, though, and we should cancel. jsigone, please keep us advised on the conditions out there. Also, anyone signed on (even as a maybe), expect a PM from me later with a cell phone number.

I'll keep you posted with the conditions. They said they only have 5% contained so it's gonna be a week+ til this fire is out. Might effect alot of rides coming up.

It will all depend on which way the wind is blowing. I know in temecula last night is was bad with smoke and ash.

Yeah... the fire's still growing, and wind directions are shifting this weekend, making it very hard to predict. I'm tempted to just cancel the ride rather than have people waking up ultra-early on Sunday not knowing what the conditions will be like. But well... I guess we have a bit more time before we have to decide.

yeah I rode yesterday morning and it wasn't too bad... but it was in Irvine and early. It started getting bad after 8 when the wind picked up.

I know I won't ride locally this weekend. Let us know how it is down south tomorrow! I may go do a coastal ride! or drive up to Santa Barbara to get a good ride in!!!

LA County is pretty much unaffected by this fire......not even a hint of smoke or ash. Perhaps you guys should do Baldy instead....

I'm not bailing on Pie Lite yet, but Fixer, would Angeles Crest be totally clear at this time?

jsigone

I'd be tempted to just cancel it. I don't want to be 40-50 miles into the ride and have a bad shift in wind and we are hacking for 2-3 hours back to the cars.

Oh yeah.....as far as I can see, the San Gabriels are completely clear.

Good point. And with the fire still growing and weather changing this Sunday...

Okay, ride cancelled. (If things magically clear up, maybe I'll ride it anyway. But not as a planned group ride.) Maybe some other time. :(

Angeles Crest, anyone? ;)

Wind in the fire area has been blowing from the E/NE, so I would guess GMR or 39 or ACH would be clear.

Like I posted in the other thread, I work in Ontario, and it is usual haze up here. Can see the mountains to the north just fine. All the smoke is to the south.

Okay, I'll keep my fingers crossed I guess and hope for the best.

todays ride was dry though, not as much wind, no smoke like yesturday. I did my 18.3mile loop today

Cool. Fingers crossed for Sunday then. I would love to do this ride. On the bright side, the home stretch is largely downhill, so if we're caught out by changing conditions, we can basically turn around at any time. Ride no longer cancelled.

Where in SD are these fires? I can't seem to be able to find anything about them.

I believe the fires are actually in Riverside, but smoke is blowing to the S/W. Map (http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=33.9+-116.85&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=10&ll=33.894357,-116.868439&spn=0.689647,1.73584&t=h&iwloc=addr) from the USDA Forest Service.

The smoke is back, seems the wind shifted again. I can't see past Mt Meadows from my work. Palomar is normally visable right over the Mt Meadows ridge.....

The forecast for Valley Center calls for winds to start blowing from the south tomorrow. That may buy us improved conditions by Sunday. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

jsigone, when you get around to it, please make the final call regarding weather conditions. It looks good to me based on the weather in Valley Center and the forecast (light winds from SW, with cooling conditions for tomorrow). As long as there's no smoke/ash issues, I think we should go for it.

People on the potential ride list, I'm sending you my cell phone number to facilitate any last minute communications.

I rode temec this morning and going North had smoke. When we were done, the temec valley near the base of Palomar on the North side was covered in smoke/haze. Seems the stuff is laying low to the ground. Hopefully the winds change before sunset so I can get a better evaluation of it all. I think I'll be riding regardless, unless its super smoky at Harrah's. Bring some arm warmers and such.....burrrr it was FREEZING this morning and I left the house a lil before 8am. 2 hours earlier gonna be colder for sure. I'm sure once we warm up a bit up the hill to the first pair of tight turns we can peal them off.

jschen
10-28-06, 03:17 PM
jsigone, I'll show up at the start regardless. If it's really bad, we can head out to GMR or something.
