The fine gentlemen from Witcomb Cycles in London England were kind enough to take the time to answer my inquiry about the Witcomb frameset that I acquired earlier this year. Here’s a copy of what they sent. I would have been happy to know the approximate year of manufacture and this is what I got!! Top notch in my book!!

Hi Robb,
Your frame was built and finished by Barrie on the 19th August 1966,the model is known as competition. It was sold as a frame only to an American air service man stationed at Milden hall USAF base.
Silk Purse Control Group and the 7120 airborne command and control squadron (7120 ACCS)

Apparently the airman would buy a couple of frames at a time and then fly them "home", the finish would then be up to the purchaser.

Neither Ernie or Barrie can recall his name, however Ernie thinks he has a record of sale somewhere and I shall forward any info that comes to light.
Ernie still comes into the shop each Tuesday to keep an eye on us and at 88 he's still very much a part of Witcombs.

I would like to post your photos on the website if you would not mind.

Hope this info helps.

Paul.

You know; that's the great thing about many English builders... Not only did they often keep records of their work, but they're SO NICE about sharing the information, even many years after the sale! Three cheers for our English friends!!!

That's pretty cool. Really in stark contrast to the, "Yeah, we don't know anything about our bikes from that era and can't even tell you what year it was built" that people get from the Fuji factory!

Great! I have to agree, I sent Bob Jackson my serial # and they gave me my info, 1954, "built for stock" . it is way to small for me to even consider riding, but I can't sell it.

Cheers!

I guess that's the great thing about the little one-man builders. They really loved what they did, and they appreciate anyone still caring about it.

I think that is because there is no Fuji factory.
