I'd like to hear your opinions about the Hummer 24 speed, foldable mountain bike.

Thanks

Do you need a folding mtn bike? If not, you can get an amazing quality mtn bike in the same prize range at your local bike shop.

Yes, I need a foldable bike so I can travel with it more easily. Also, I want to be able to fit the bike in the trunk of a car.

I would look into a nice steel frame hard tail mountain bike, then send it off to S&S machine. http://www.sandsmachine.com/a_com_m2.htm

Yawn. Keep humming.

For $750, you get an AL frame, low end RST fork (65mm travel?? yikes!) no-name wheels, low-end brakes, the bottom rung shimano shifters, no-name crank... I can do better for half the price at my LBS. If $750 is your approximate price range, look into a Specialized Rockhopper. You wont be disapointed.

My personal opnion is anything that needs to be rebadged with a currently-popular suv name must not be able to stand on its own merits. Remember the Jeep mountain bikes? Blech.

MTBR.com only has one or two bike by the company who builds the 'hummer' (Montague)
http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Bike_hardtail/product_75975.shtml

Shop for what fits your use, not a name. If your looking into folders or something to frequently travel with, consider an S&S coupled frame.

What exactly are you looking for? Maybe we can help?

Skip the Hummer label and knock $200 off the pricetag by getting the bike directly from Montague. Although, even at that price ($550 as listed on Montague's website) I agree that the component spec is really low-end. One could do better.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as that but I would definately agree that it's probably costing more than it's worth. I understand that the Ferrari-Colnago (yes, I know it's not an SUV label) MTB is a pretty nice bike. Is it $12,000 worth of nice? Hell no.

Ugh! Don't even get me started on the Jeep branding. As a Jeep owner, I detest all the crappy "accessory" branding they've done by slapping the label onto crappy products (Jeep boombox, Jeep luggage...) and marking up the price. It just deteriorates the name in the eyes of the clueful.

FWIW, there are some higher end Jeep branded MTBs that are not bad performers (not spectacular) but they're still overpriced for what you get and they do scream "poseur".

The only bikes rebadged as 'cars' I can remember being worth anything were the mercedes dualies (which were AMP Research bikes) and the uber-cool porsche bikes (votec forks! remember those?)

Yeah, I remember them. I've heard mixed reviews of the AMP Research bikes though. A few people claimed they were succeptable to frame failures at the shock-pivot. I've never ridden or actually seen one up close however. I remember seeing the press release about the Porsche bikes. They seemed overly pricey. I hadn't heard how they performed in the rough. I did read some story about a bunch of guys having a good laugh over some poseur who was riding one (on pavement) while hanging onto a cellphone. Did you ever get a glimpse of the BMW mountain bike. It's a folding bike... same component spec as the Hummer bike but add another $250. Curiously enough, BMW's upper-end duallie MTBs have a pretty nifty leading-link fork design that is similar to the Whyte 4-bar linkage front forks. And hey... the BMW top-of-the-line bike only costs 10 times that of the Hummer.

Kinda like their cars. Okay for what they are, but not worth the extra few thousand ;)

Heres a 'lower-end' porsche model (the 'S' I beleive.) The Nicer (but overpriced at $6000) Evo model had the Formula disc brakes, sachs components, and the votec fork.

What do you expect from cars that have really odd locations for their center-of-gravity? :D

I know Porsche sponsored a team a while back. Did they actually race their bikes?

Hmm, cant honestly recall...

Evidently you havn't seen what passes for 'attractive' in the porsche stable these days. All the cars look the same, and then they have this... this... THING: http://www3.us.porsche.com/english/usa/cayenne/default.htm

Ick. The last attractive porsche was made around 1997 or so, IMHO.

Didn't one of the bike rags run an article about that thing? I think they were seriously marketing those things for the Marines. <shakes head> I know if I was issued one of those I'd be changing EVERYTHING on it, and that's just so it could be ridden on some of the local FL trails. The way that thing's spec'd I wouldn't use it to hop a curb.

Actually the Marines did field test it and reports came back favourably. The MILSPEC version has some upgraded components (disc front brake, Deore drivetrain) but is still 8sp and retains the RST281 front fork. Personally speaking, I think the bike is probably "good enough for government work". An 8sp drivetrain is probably less finicky than 9sp and the RST fork may not be high-zoot air/oil but it's probably fairly reliable. Remember that this thing has to be air-droppable and strapped to the outside of armoured vehicles as they forage rivers and drive up beachheads. They have to endure low-maintenance environments. Simple is better. Besides, we're talking Marines here... they're not expecting that much comfort. ;)

Just watch some old footage of Vietcong guerillas on heavy singlespeed clunkers riding the Ho Chi Minh trail. You can bet that they're not riding Santa Cruz Bullits. Just because it doesn't have a Monster-T on the front and 8" of rear suspension doesn't mean it can't handle some pretty rough stuff.

I'd trust those singlespeed clunkers before I'd trust that in "civilian" form.

I too wouldn't buy the civilian version without some real upgrades. I'm a little surprised they don't sell an up-spec'ed civilian version. The military version of anything tends to be a tradeoff between price against reliability, maintainability and performance. They're designed to be bought in bulk. Add to that the fact that because designs take a while from a response to an RFP to actual procurement approval, the specs are usually a bit dated. For the most part, things like this are considered sunk cost items and fairly disposable. They don't care that it lasts an overally long time or that it can be upgraded. They may only need it to last a single mission. OTOH the civilian market would generally demand such things be more modern with more "luxurious" appointments.

Hold on, Peugot made decent bikes for a while (maybe they still do), and I know I would much rather be caught on a Peugot bike, than in a Peugot car.

Oh wait...caught on a "freedom" bike, than in a "freedom" car. :D

If you want a bike that fits in your trunk, you probably don't need a folding bike. I used to put my MTB in the trunk of a '92 Toyota Celica by taking off both wheels. Granted, the Celica has a decent sized trunk considering the size of the car but I think most any sedan or larger 2 door would fit a bike with the wheels removed.

I was able to shove my MTB into the backseat of a Ford Festiva and only had to take the front wheel off.

I shoved my 21" commuter bike into the backseat, not the hatch, (too many subs and amps) of a buddies '86 Firebird. I had to yank the wheels but that's the beautiful thing about quick releases.

Actually, if they'd lose that horrible yellow color and paint it in flat camo tones (and maybe add a rifle rack), you'd have a bike there which would get some good ol' boys off their ATV's and on the bike trails. I've never understood why MTB companies market their bikes in techy and designer paint jobs....when so many of the people who could be marketted at prefer something like the Hummer. Candy chartreuse just doesn't exude that he-man brute toughness that people want to associate with mountain biking.....army drab does.

Hey... don't pidgeonhole us mountain bikers! Remember the annodized purple craze? |8^) At anyrate, my MTBs have all been rather subdued colours... usually dark blues or black. My current bike is nude/bare carbon fibre. I like the CF pattern despite the fact that these days, it's become the high-tech equivalent of wicker. :D

An update on squeezing bikes into space limited cars. My wife needed the truck today and I wanted to go trail riding after work so I removed the wheels, seat post, and handlebars from my mtn bike and fit it into the hatch of my Nissan 350Z. Talk about a tight fit but it's in there. I thought I was going to have to put the wheels in the passenger seat because of the rear strut tower brace but they made it back there too.

Before you get jumped on, because there are some guys here who will feel the need to tell you off, this is an old retired thread that should never be brought back to the forefront because...well...its old. ;) :p

Anyways, I have been riding 3 years and have never met anyone who rides a hummer let alone SEEN an actual hummer bike.

Sorry bout that. Most forums say "search before you post" and that's what I did.
Anyhoo, I bought one and so far it's great.

As Forrest would say, "That's all I have to say about that"

Dont worry, if you search and post its wrong, but if you post without searching its wrong too ;):p...

Seriously, just post away and enjoy :D...Thats why I gave the warning as a pretext to my post ;), seriously if hummer was worth their weight I would expect to see ONE in whistler. No being pretentious but I have seen just about every uniqueish bike there is :)

They probably don't ride them at whistler because if you hit a pebble too fast the frame would fall apart..
