Bicycle Mechanics - clicking noise in the fork?

Hey guys just a quick question. I have a brand new 06' lemond reno with about 60 miles on it. It recently started to make a clicking noise like something loosened up. It seems to be the fork and then where it goes through the frame and then attaches to the bars. The fork clicks when it moves forward and back. It is very easy to reproduce as all i have to do is hit the front brake and then rock the bike forward and back. Seems like something might have loosened up since its new but a quick check of the bolts in the area seem tight. I will bring it down to the LBS as they told me things might start to loosen up and bring it in so they can tighten anything but i was wondering should i stop riding? will this damage anything? its a cf fork too. If it's not a really obvious noise and nothing is obviously loose, I wouldn't worry about a ride or two before you can get it in. I'd still try to get it in, though.

It's probably just some slop in the headset or one of the fasteners in that area. But, just to be sure, take a VERY close look over all the components in that area to see if any have small cracks developing. If you find anything odd, don't ride it until the shop looks at it.

The load on your headset is not correct, I think. When you hit the front brake, can you feel a little knock in the handlebars?

If the headset was loaded tightly at the shop, it may take a while for the click to become audible. I noticed it after about 500 miles on my bike. Like saabfan said, check for any visible damage, and if there is none, try tightening the load a bit. Loosen the side bolts on the stem, tighten the top cap bolt down a bit, then tighten the side bolts once more.

This will work. i'm not sure about the bearing breakin. I'm guessing the stem was installed too tight on the steerer tube when they tightened down the top cap which should adjust pre-load on the headset. I seem to do this everytime I change out a stem and need to readjust everything after 1/2mi of riding.

I was having a similar problem and apparently the fork/stem was not installed correctly. First the top cap needs to be tightened, THEN the stem. Once I loosened everything up, and retightened them in this order the noise went away.

The noise could also possibly be caused by a crack in the steer tube of the fork. Turboem1, does your cf fork have a cf steer tube?

The 2006 Lemond Reno has an aluminum steerer. I agree with others about the headset loading. Another thing is it may just be cable slap on the headtube and the frame is amplifying the sound.

I agree with the headset "loading" answers as well. Too tight or too loose will both cause the clicking problem you described. HOWEVER, too tight is more likely to cause the clicking than too loose.

Have heard of this before but the problem was with the front QR being too tight not the headset.
