One of my good riding buddies is the black hole of inner tubes. He gets flats without the least provocation. At some point he discovered that his Ksyrium wheels had a stem hole drilled too wide and the tube would try and go out that way and blow. He weighs an awful lot and insists on exotic, paper weight tires. He rides on very sticky tires that pick up everything, including puncture makers. I have seen my buddy cancel rides because after 2 miles he has had 3 flats. The record...7 flats in a 30 mile ride. Yes, we ran out of CO2. We ran out of tubes and we ran out of patches. He ran out of patience, I had to quit making smart ass remarks.
The clincher (ha ha) is this: the other night his wife wakes him up and proclaims that there is someone downstairs. After creeping down the stairs, turning lights on as they go. They look around and find no one. He turns to her and asks what the noise she heard was. She said it sounded kind of like,"psssst". He goes back up stairs and gets into bed realizing that he has now had a blow out in his sleep.
I ride with him because of the entertainment value. He rides with me because I carry spare CO2 cartridges.

Hi,

While we're on the subject, what does everyone prefer? Carrying CO2 or one of those mini-pumps? Also, how many spare tubes do you guys take on a century ride?

This is in no way meant to sound like I'm an expert, with that in mind, I carry 1 tube and 2 CO2 cartridges. I usually ride centuries with buddies and they carry similar flats kits. Usually one of us has a patch kit. Did I say there would be math? If 4 of us are riding together, that gives us 4 tubes, 8 CO2 thingies (technical term) and the ability to patch a multitude of holes. This is overkill, but we have a secure feeling.

I carry two tubes, a hand pump and a patch kit. So far I have had to use both tubes only once.

I've been carrying one tube, a C02 pump w/ 2 cartridges, and a patch kit. I' getting ready to buy a hand pump that allows one to achieve 110 psi and does not require an adapter on the tire valve.

Confession - I am terrible at changing tubes and too lazy to practice at home until I get better. I also had to abort a solo century last month when I finally blew out a rear tire that had 2700 miles on it and had never been rotated.

I carry one tube, tire irons and a multitool in my seat bag. I have a small pump attached to the frame. My wife carries one tube and tire irons in her seat bag. Since I'm always with her when she rides there's no need for her to carry a pump.
