Fifty Plus (50+) - What's your favorite riding temperature?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Let's say you are going to take a ride of at least 10 miles. Let's assume it's a sunny or partly sunny day, with reasonable humidity. If you could set the temperature to whatever you wanted, what would you pick?
I've discriminated against those who prefer temps of below 30, by not including that option. Sorry.

I'd pick 65f. Maybe 60f if the sun is shinning brightly.
EDIT:
You made this into a poll so I voted for 60-64.

And before anyone else can say it - the correct answer is NOT 98.6 degrees!!!!

no multiple choice? 50 to 65F

Surely you must have a particularly favorite?
57?
61?
Like all the same, then vote for 50-59 as it has 2/3rds of your favorites.
In this particular poll, I thought multiple choices would "cloud" the responses. Some people might vote 5 times, others 1 time. In some polls that would be fine, but in this one it sure would give the multiple voters a lot of leeway to skew the results.
Not that the results really mean anything.

I love it between 40-60 with no wind. Road today in 35 degrees but there was no wind. If its windy I like it to be warmer around 60.

In 10 miles I'm just getting warmed up, so it had better be warm to start!

Well, I did say "at least 10 miles." I figured that for taking a one mile ride, the temperature didn't really matter all that much. However if all one ever rides is 5 miles or so, then they should feel free to go ahead and vote if they have a fav temp.

Many years ago I lived in Melbourne, Florida. As much as I dislike riding in the upper 80s today, back then the breeze from riding a bike beat the heat of walking in an 88-90 degree sun. So I got to the point where I enjoyed rides when it was near 90. I'd have to reacclimate if I moved back down there.

I luv the cold. Fond memories of Central Park before it got clogged with rollobladers and joggers.
Doing group rides up to Nyack for breakfast and coughing up ice cubes,,,lol.
Morning rides to work at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks Alaska ( yeah I know, no sub 30 temps allowed ) or riding around Cook Inlet in Anchorage.
Cold is good for you.
Regular trips back home to Toronto for Boxing Day now are like summer recess.

I have a prefered range (55-70). I avoid riding in temps below freezing, and over 90 (although I have done both).

Ideal conditions are NO rain- NO wind and between 45 and 90. And all the hills being flat or downhill. Unfortunately where I live it is not possible but so far this year it has not been too bad. Nearly November and still no Frost recorded anywhere in the UK. Rain is beginning to get tiresome in the last few weeks, but judge it right and you can miss the continual showers merging together and the temp seems to be above 50 deg. Then if you do get cold-it won't be long before the terrain starts rising to bring a body temp rise again.
I like it hot. I want to sweat enough that if I'm not moving the sweat just drips off of me. I like the sensation of riding fast enough that the sweat evaporates and keep me cool. However, and this is a BIG however, if I'm doing nothing but serious climbing, then I like it a bit cooler. But for where I live, flat to rolling hills and an occasional climb. I like it hot. The joints don't see to ache as much and the muscles seem more eager to perfrom when it's hot.
Jeeeez....is this what being 50+ is supposed to be about???
This has to rank as the Dullest Thread of the Week.
How about something a little more interesting and less "old fogeyesque"...like, "What's Your Favorite Sexual Position?".

Here in the fecund Brazos Valley, we get temps from 75 - 100 9 months a year with humidity nearly always above 75 %.
If I ever move away from here, part of the reason will be to get to a drier, cooler climate. My favorite wife has not yet declared where that climate may be. For me, there's nothing better than a cool 60-degree morning when I have to wear 2 T-shirts instead of one!
63-64F is perfection.
Yup.

70 to 74 which we have in the morning and late afternoon 365 days a year... I like when it is raining when I am going up hill and it can be pretty fun going down hill too.
We have that experience about 8 months a year.

OK, I admit to feeling cranky today... four days without a ride will do that to me. But, how is this thread more lame than the one you posted about fitness today and 20 years ago? I mean I know you sell fitness software, but is the 50+ forum about hawking one's products/services? Give folks a break. Of course, if your comment was made in jest and not serious, then you can forget everything I just said, and you have my apologies.

This is the OFFICIAL scoop about the stated purposes of the 50+ Forum.
Share the victories, challenges, successes and special concerns of bicyclists 50 and older. Especially useful for those entering or reentering bicycling.
BTW, the easiest thing in the world is to mock someone else's writing. It is much more difficult to be constructive in your posts.

If you'll search my posting history, you'll find that I do, generally, try to be helpful and informative.
Perhaps it's the season, but this week seems to have had a plethora of "what's your favorite temperature?", "what do you eat for dinner?" and "how do you like your oatmeal prepared?" threads that seem more related to "old farts" than "50+ cyclists"...IMO, of course. :D

You know us all too well. :)
It was hard to choose between the upper 70s and low 80s ranges - but the humidity here is such that the cooler range is usually the most comfortable for me.
Won't see that again until May, alas.

I think it is the season. Except for a hardy few (or those in gentler climes) many of us are hanging up our bikes or putting them on the trainers for the winter. So we're kind of moping around, with little bike-related to say.
I've tried winter biking and it's not my thing. When there's snow on the ground I'd rather XC ski!
And if DG makes a gloating wisecrack about the warm weather in San Diego, we're all going to go out there and kick his heinie into the Pacific. :D

If you will go to my post, on "Weather Ahead for the Coming Week (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=238978)," hopefully you will discover that the primary purpose was to show off the very neat link to NOAA (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?CityName=Parker&state=CO&site=BOU), of which many folks are/were unawares. I did this in the context of discussing the weather, but that was my major purpose.

I voted 60-64 and I see 70-74 was tops with 30% of the vote and that would be ok with me with a low dew point on cloudy day.

I guess that means it's safe for me to say that it's in the 90's here today, oh well, I would prefer cooler weather.:D

When one is 50+, one's favorite temperature does become 98.6 degrees. Every 98.6 degree day is a good day.
As to the thread being boring, well, I could have started a poll about whether the 50+ crowd prefers
1) sock-sock-shoe-shoe
2) sock-shoe-sock-shoe
3) sock-sock
4) shoe-shoe
5) sandal-sandal
6) bare

To no surprise, so far about 75% of the respondents have chosen between 60 to 74. With only 6 out of 80 people picking below 60.

That's easy. Sock - shoe - sock - shoe. That way if the room gets flooded in the middle of the process, only one foot gets wet.

So out of 87 voters, we had 8 prefer 80 or above and 6 who like it below 60. 73 like it 60-79, no surprise here.
I don't relate at all to the two who picked 85-89. My favorite is 55-60. At 85 I'm dying (although as I wrote earlier, I used to bike in Florida when it was 85-90 as it was cooler than walking). Fortunately here in Wisconsin we don't get that many 85+ days. Unfortunately we sure get a lot of sub-20 days. Not much biking then.
Right now I'm lamenting the poor autumn weather we're getting in Wisconsin. Usually the latter half of October is wonderful: sunny, dry, temps in the mid-50's. This year it has been overcast, wet, and in the mid to lower 40s much of the time. So what is normally perfect biking and hiking weather has been dreary. With the worst fall foliage colors I can remeber seeing in many years. A depressing way to go into the Wisconsin winter.

Any temperature above 30 degrees is fine for me as long as the wind is under 30 MPH.
