Ok, Round Two....

This is where it all started.... http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=236504

I, the light winner, here by pledge to give up my brand new high quality LED light and 3 sets of slightly used rechargable batteries for said light to the winner of a contest. The contest is quite simple.... the person who can name the best reason for commuting by bike will win the light. I, owner of the light, will be the sole judge that determines the winner. I, owner of the light will carefully pack said light, and deliver it to the winner at no cost to the winner.

The only rules are:
1.) The contest will end November 1st at 8:00Pm. The winner will be anounced at that time.
2.) The best reason will not be cheesy, but funny and (or) entertaining. Don't tell me about your grandma that got killed commuting to work, or about how it has saved your life or any of that crap.
3.) Pictures are welcome, but not a requirement.
4.) I will get back to you.

Let me know if there are any questions...

I think the shrimp eating contest was a better idea, but I'll start thinking of something so side-splittingly funny that you'll be compelled to award that light to me.

Am I eligible? :) Glad you found the light was too nice to sit. That was behind my desire to give it away too. It would be backup to my backup.

I can't wait to read the reasons for commuting ...

I do it to feel better about myself, who I am. you might find it "cheesey" but it's true. The people around me at work are just set in their ways and don't give a second's consideration to others around them=> so it stands to reason they would drive a car, it suits them. But even on the job they're only concerned about themselves-- I mean the most annoying thing about my job is when out of nowhere an acrobat falls on you during your coffee break, ...damned acrobats... prima donnas.

I am 50 years old and commute 7 miles to McDonalds for breakfast every morning. They have a senior discount so not only do I get to eat cheap I also hang out with the other seniors and socialize. Riding a bike always starts conversations pertaining to the dangers and healthy advantages of riding a bicycle. Riding a bike also perks up the women as they figure if your healthy enough to ride a bike your healthy enough for sporting adventures involving them. It's always an easy way to start interesting conversations. I always start my breakfast commute before sunrise in order to make sure I have the best seat in the joint, which allows me to watch my bike, and this requires a light. I currently have a light but I could certainly use the one your giving away as it sounds much better than the one I currently use.

I commute because the university I work for charges out the wazoo for parking. $40 is the minimum monthly charge, and then you're stuck half way between Lincoln and Omaha. Want a closer lot? Pay up! I get to work fast 'cause I don't have to walk 20 blocks, I get a little excercise and during the day, I can run errands on my bike too. And my arthritic knee likes not walking. And my old Honda is eroding into a Chevy Vega. Send me the damn light - daylight saving time is almost over.

I bike to work because I like the look on Cagers faces when I fly pass them sitting in traffic. I love it when one of them ask "do you know you where doing 35 mph?" Or when they see me running down the middle of the lane at the speed of traffic at 35 mph. Oh yes and when they feel like they have done something by just talking to me about riding a bike,,, LOL. I even had a cop stop me and tell me that I'm riding to fast on the street and that I really need to be on the sidewalk. I just luaghed at him and said "If I'm going to fast for the street, then I'm really going to fast for the sidewalk" He just shock his head and got back in his car and left. That was priceless.

Hands down, this has gotta be the funniest post. $40 a month is being charged out the wazoo? I just forwarded this to my sister who's monthly parking bill in NYC is about $600!!!

At 33 years old I am less than 2 years into my new life. That happend on June 16th over a year ago when I got my new hip. After years of pain from misalighnment caused by my mild CP I have much less pain. I still limp and am not fast but I can ride. I ride for selfish reasons.

1) Shorter arguments with my high school alternative students when they say they can't make it or they were late because of no good reason.

2) Show my solidarity with my students by riding through "their" community even though some people think it is the "ghetto". In my experience the people are nicer in the "bad" neigborhood thaan the nicer ones in my 21 miles each way

3) Save $$ on gas to pay off my surgery. Waukegan dist 60 has cruddy insurance

4) Show my students that nothinging is impossible. I have had some that out of ignorance think I have mental capacity problems becasue of my limp. Well, ignorance can be addressed and it is when they see me lay my bike down to get on and off but pedal off into the distance.

5)Endorphines

6) Getting back some of the "play time" I missed out on in younger years because of my situation.

7) Conversations like the following I had with a HS teacher of mine who is still working. As I rode by the HS she said hello and she asked how long I was riding that day. I said I was on the way home and would have over 42 mles for the day from work and back. She asked if I was crazy...Why would I do that ...was my car broken or something. "Nope...I'm just crazy" She smiled and was confused maybe and walked on. It is the small moments like that.

I started riding to lose weight. I've lost some pounds over the past 2.5 years but what keeps me going is the fact that my fat butt can haul at almost 20mph now. I'm still working on going faster, but I'm building a faster bike now too. I also *love* riding fixed gear, no matter how retarted "I like to bike" thinks it is. I love the looks I get when people ask what I do for the winter and I answer "put on my studded tires and keep going". Their jaws drop in awe that you can even GET studded tires for bicycles. Riding day in and day out gives me self respect, and keeps me from getting fatter ;)

The average cyclist burns 35 calories a mile. You might get 47 mpg in your Civic hybrid, but I get 4.28 miles per PBR on my bike. Plus, PBR tastes better than gasoline.

50 years old is a senior citizen? I sure as heck won't call myself that when I reach that marker.

Best reason to bike -- because you can spend hours every day reeking so bad that even your dog can't stand being near you, but people will still look to you as an inspiration.

Plus, PBR tastes better than gasoline.

Not the brands of gasoline that I've tried.....

One of the reasons:

I ride my bike to justify my not so moderate alcohol consumtion...& to make the 10 mile trek to the bar the next day to pick up my car. So basically riding my bike saves lives.

Today, I found another reason for bike commuting.

There is a stretch of Rock Blvd near the Truckee River in Sparks NV that I call "Road Kill Alley". It is frequently littered with 3 to 5 flat furry spots. Some of them, not so flat. This morning, there was a quite fresh kitty. It wasn't even flat yet. On a 2 way four lane road, it was in the second lane from the shoulder. Just a second after I glanced at it, while I was still looking, a big local delivery truck flew by, nailing the killed kitty. It flew up in the air and landed, a bit flatter this time. I immediatly looked the other way and closed my eyes, for fear of being splattered by the bits of fresh kitty. I got quite nauseated and thought I just might start blowing chunks. I didn't.

So, THAT is why I bike commute. What other activity can you do that puts you in danger of getting splattered by roadkill?

Don't even get me started on the dark spot on the road that started out as a racoon. Last winter.

There once was a young engineer
Who was active and athletic
He aged nicely but enjoyed his beer
Soon his physic became pathetic

He tried to regularly work out
But was busy with lots to do
So he was filled with self doubt
And decided on something new

As a kid, he enjoyed his bike
And he thought, "could I ride to work?"
It might just be something to like
How many drivers would I irk?

Soon he was riding all seasons
His life was now filled with much joy
He did it for many reasons
And again, he felt like a boy

Cycling hasn't noticably improved my fitness but it has seemed to stop the decay.
I bicycle commute because:
I enjoy it.
I use less gas.
I can drink beer.
I can eat.
Its fun.
Its an excuse to buy more cycling stuff.
I like to ride but don't have much time. Commuting allows me to ride every day.
