Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Trek 4 the Troops

In December, 2006 I'm embarking on a cross country ride to raise awareness and nonpartisan support for our troops involved in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm calling the ride Trek 4 the Troops, and I welcome you to read more about it at www.trek4thetroops.com.

What makes this ride different from other cross-continental awareness/fund raising rides?

The ride will be done solo, without a support vehicle, on a fixed-gear. That’s right, FIXED GEAR! To the best of my knowledge only a select few have ever traversed the continent on a fixed-gear, and some might say that the attempt is crazy.

I’ll be following a fairly southerly route from San Diego to Savannah, and I welcome anyone/everyone to ride along should I pass through your area. Fixed gear bikes not required! I’ll be updating the ride website every day, and who knows, maybe your picture will show up there.

I’m not soliciting funds or donations directly. I have no way (or desire) to handle donations of cash. I'm just trying to raise awareness and support for the many fine organizations that are doing a wonderful job supporting the troops. I just wanted to say i'm glad to hear some support for our troops b/c so many people i know connect those we support our troop bumper stickesr with supporting bush thats just total bull anyways I wish you the best of luck on your journey might want to take a GPS with you to help keep from getting caught up in some kind of road map

I have to admit, I'm not much of a gadget guy. This may be worth the money, though. Quick question for anyone who's used one: do they help with the actual route planning, like some of the GPS nav systems for cars, or does it just tell you where you are?

It'd be great if you can ride along in San Diego. Bring as many folks as you can, the more the merrier.

I'm currently working on setting up some "media events" for Thursday, Dec 7th. I'm staying with a friend while in town, who happens to live very near the 20 mile mark on a route that a local guy has recommended. So, to really make it a coast to coast ride I may ride a bit on Thursday, sort of a prologue to my Tour de USA!

On that Friday, I'll be starting a few miles east of where Fletcher turns into Broadway. I'll post more details on exactly where/when on the ride website a few days beforehand.
