The bike I have hanging in my furnace room is a '92 miyata nine 14, with full 105 gruppo (indexed dtube r. der. shifter; friction front d. shifter).

I was thinking of swapping out the 105 cranks for some sugino cranks I have, just for aesthetics. I kind of want to lose the "space 1999" clunky plastic design of the 105s. Should any crankset be okay, or would there be a compatibility problem retrofitting cranks made for an 8 or 9 speed cassette to a 7 speed (besides octalink/square taper--i.e.: spacing and chains).

I'm not sure that you're gonna find many here who remember '92-vintage 105 (I don't). But assuming that your tooth counts don't change, I don't foresee a problem.

Since you already have the parts anyway, there's not much risk in trying it, is there? :p

Should be fine if the crankset matches up to the bottom bracket and, as DMF said, if there isn't too big a difference in the size of the chainrings. We're assuming you're replacing a double crankset with a double crankset.

DMF: I like the way you think, sir!

Al: double-double, yuppers.

Damn I wish they had In'n'out on the east coast.
